Do birds eat peanut butter and is it safe?
Peanut butter made specifically for birds is perfectly safe and widely enjoyed by many garden birds. Avoid ordinary household peanut butter because it may contain too much salt, added sugar or sweeteners. Instead, use a low-salt bird formulation such as Flutter Butter®, offered in a purpose-made feeder and replaced before it becomes stale or mouldy. Unlike loose peanuts and seeds (which we currently recommend pausing from May to October) specially formulated peanut butter for birds is a safe and suitable summer food.
What birds like peanut butter?
Most garden birds will eat peanut butter if they can reach it, although some are much more likely to eat it than others, such as Robins, tits, Nuthatches and Great Spotted Woodpeckers. It provides plenty of fat, protein and energy.
How do you feed peanut butter to birds?
Feed peanut butter made specifically for birds in a purpose-designed hanging feeder such as the Flutter Butter® hanging or window feeders.
- Place the Flutter Butter refill securely inside the feeder
- Position it in the shade during hot weather, as the food may soften or melt in direct sunlight.
- Replace the food after seven days or if it becomes wet, mouldy or contaminated.
- Clean the feeder at least weekly, rinse it thoroughly and let it dry before refilling.
- Do not use ordinary household peanut butter, which may contain too much salt, sugar or unsuitable additives.
