RSPB Silhouette hedgehog home

R407814
RSPB > Wildlife > Hedgehogs

Our great-looking home is a safe retreat for hedgehogs. With its gently-sloping roof and distinctive hedgehog silhouette design carved on the front, it's definitely a ''des-res'' for our spiky friends! It's safe too - the internal entrance is concealed, to help protect them from predators. Although it's cosy for the long winter, there are ventilation holes to aid air flow. The secure roof can be opened for inspection and cleaning.

View what's happening in your hedgehog home with a wildlife camera. This hedgehog home comes with a pre drilled hole to enable easy camera instalation.

The box may be used as a nest site from spring until June/July, and as shelter from poor weather and predators until their winter hibernation. They will typically hibernate between November and March dependent on the weather.

Where should I put the hedgehog house?

Position the Hedgehog home somewhere quiet, out of the prevailing wind. Under shrubs is an ideal place as it will help to ensure the hedgehogs are undisturbed. Cover the shelter with leaves and brushwood to camouflage it and create a cosy den.

When will hedgehogs use this home?

Hedgehog houses may be used for winter hibernation, throughout the summer as a safe shelter, or, if you're very lucky, by a female making a nest to have her young.

      How can I encourage hedgehogs?

Consider making your garden more wildlife friendly. Hedgehogs need to be able to get from garden to garden to look for food. Solid fencing all-round will prevent them being able to travel between gardens so ensure there's a gap or that you choose natural hedging in places instead of solid fence. You can also encourage hedgehogs by providing them with suitable habitats. They like thick dense undergrowth and a variety of lengths of grass. You may also be able to provide hedgehogs with supplementary food. This is particularly useful during periods of drought when natural insect foods may be harder to come by. Their varied diet allows them to eat many kinds of foods we have around the home. With the exception of milk, bread, and mealworms, which should be avoided, you can put out almost anything. A particular favourite is dog or cat food, but you can also try small amounts of cake, biscuits and pastry as well as fresh and dried fruits and cooked vegetables.

Garden dangers to watch out for

Avoid using toxic chemicals. Slug pellets can be particularly detrimental. When putting preservative on garden sheds, fences and other wood furniture around the garden use non-toxic brands. Hedgehogs often lick new smells and surfaces. Hedghogs habitually hide themselves in piles of leaves, grass cuttings, pampas grass, compost heaps and bags of rubbish. Always check these before burning, cutting, strimming, mowing, putting a fork into or disposing of them. Many plastic items can trap, ensnare or cut a hedgehog. These include netting, plastic can holders, large necked bottles, plastic pots and barbed wire.Hedgehogs can also easily fall down holes, into water troughs, ponds, swimming pools and other types of water vessel. If you cannot prevent them from falling in, then make sure there is always a way for them to get out. Dogs can injure hedgehogs, so make sure you know what your dog is doing when in the garden late at night.

What happens if I disturb a hedgehog?

If you accidentally disturb an active hedgehog nest, carefully replace the material. The hedgehog will soon repair or move the nest elsewhere. If there are young in the nest, avoid touching them. Similarly, if it is a hibernating adult, avoid waking it. Should it wake, you may want to leave it some food nearby until it hibernates again.

      Happy hedgehog!
Good quality product, solid and well made. Slight problem with lid screw but quickly sorted by helpful RSPB staff. Put the new box out in the garden with a little food in the entrance, water outside, some straw and leaves inside, plus a stash of more dead leaves nearby. By the second morning there was a much reduced pile of leaves, with a trail of them leading directly into the new box. So it already looks like a hog has been busy and I might have a resident. Can't ask for more than that!

      A sanctuary in the garden
We took delivery of the Silhouette hedgehog 'house' yesterday. It is beautifully constructed and is destined for a spot in the garden borders we have located. Would you recommend that we paint the box externally, or just leave it as bare wood?
      RSPB response
Paint can be toxic to hedgehogs. Luckily the home arrives ready to place outside. Cover with leaves/brushwood & place in a quiet area to encourage hedgehogs. They'll use leaves & straw as nest material... good luck!

      The hedgehog loves it!
We bought this one last summer after we found a hedgehog having built a nest and having urchins in an old flower pot in our garden.
She hibernated in it (we had given her plenty of hay) - there was a lovely hedgehog shaped nest inside, when I cleaned it earlier this month, and now she has started dragging leaves and hay into it again, so I expect another litter is on its way.

      Excellent quality product
I have been looking for a good quality, safe, dry and comfortable home for our visiting hedgehogs, and decided this was the best product that I had found. Although I hadn't seen them for a couple of weeks and wondered if they had already found their winter homes, I ordered it anyway. It arrived less than 48 hours after placing my order. I placed it in the garden and filled it with some straw. I ordered the hedgehog home as part of a set with the food bowl and buggy crunch food so placed that just outside with a bowl of clean water. I was delighted to find the following morning that the food had all gone and there was a little trail of straw outside the box, I've not seen the hedgehog but clearly they have found and approved of their new habitat and I'm hoping they decide to make it their home.

RSPB response: Thank you for this lovely review - it's great that your hedgehogs have a safe and sturdy home to stay in during the winter months.

      Lovely home - Hedgehog House
Purchased this as we have had two hedgehogs in the garden and I wanted to make sure he got some food. I put some food in the house and, sure enough, he found it.

This is a lovely house and it only took him a few hours until he used it. I am hoping he will decide to move in although we do have other wildlife in the garden so he may decide to go elsewhere.

However, this is a lovely box and it is easy to refill his food.

Very happy with purchase. Although quite expensive. I love it - and so does the hedgehog!

      Hog takes up residence
I purchased this because we had been getting a visit from spiky and he seemed to be looking for somwhere to live. A few times we found him going into our shed at night. The first two nights after purchase he still went into the shed. On nights 3 & 4 I found he had spent some time in the hog home and this morning on day 5 there he was fast asleep in his new home. I hope he enjoys it through the winter. It is well made and strong.

      well made with enough room.
I purchased one of these box's for use by a hedgehog that will possibly spend most of it's life in semi captivity. The box is well made with lots of room in the main compartment. The roof can be released and allows easy access for cleaning. The walls are thick which allows protection and a box which will last. Well worth the cost if you want a nice looking box that can be used as housing or just a feeding station.
