Product information

Specially designed for two common bee home dwellers; the leafcutter and red mason bees. This high-quality bee home comes with removable nesting trays, metal fastenings for secure sitting, and an overhanging roof to protect bees from the rain. The apex roof is painted (using non-toxic paint) a light sage green and matches the style of some of our most popular bird nest boxes.

  • Made in the UK
  • Against deforestation: Made from FSC ® certified pine.
  • Bespoke 8mm and 10mm nest holes for red mason and leafcutter bees.
  • Optimal 15cm hole depth ensuring plenty of eggs are laid and protected.
  • Removable trays for inspection and cleaning.

We would recommend cleaning the home every 1 to 2 years. You can either clean your home once nests have vacated in Spring or at the end of the breeding season (late September to October). The trays can be cleaned with a brush and mild, non-toxic disinfectant such as Ark-Klens.

If you are cleaning in late September-October, please carefully remove any bee cocoons present and place these in a ‘release box’ where they will stay until the following Spring.

A small container, ideally made of natural materials such as cardboard or wood, can be used as a ‘release box’ (e.g. a capped toilet roll). Avoid metal containers. Plastic boxes can be used, but the lid should be left loose and the bottom lined with tissue to prevent condensation. The box will need a small hole (minimum 10mm diameter) to allow bees to emerge in Spring.

The release box should be kept somewhere cool and dry (for example a garden shed or garage) during the winter months and then placed outside in Spring for the bees to emerge when ready.

Did you know we have over 260 species of bee in the UK?

Rather than living in colonies, the vast majority of our bees are solitary, with each female building her own nests.

These non-aggressive, highly efficient pollinators are important to our ecosystems and economy, including the pollination of many of our wildflowers and fruit and vegetable crops.

Having a variety of pollinator-friendly plants in your garden from March to September is a great way to help while providing a safe, cosy nesting site will also make a big difference.

Needs strengthening
Put our new bee house up 3 weeks ago for leafcutter bees and a couple of days ago the top came loose and all the trays fell to the ground. The screw holding the metal fixing at the top had fallen out. Fortunately no bees had started nesting and the trays were undamaged. The box itself is of good quality but quite heavy, and the screw which attached the metal fixing it came with was too small for the job. We have now replaced all screws to ensure this does not happen. Looks like a design flaw.
RSPB response

Fantastic, well crafted
I ordered this Bee home for a family gift and had researched other from different shops. This one had some great reviews and I wasn't disappointed when it arrived. It's beautifully made, fantastic quality and we can't wait to put it out in our garden, ready for the bees to start using it. So pleased I choose this one and pleased to be supporting the RSPB too!

Already in use!
Not only is this bee home lovely to look at and easy to put up, after only a short time of being mounted near our lavender bush, we already have a leafcutter bee laying her eggs!

So lovely to see and know they have a safe place to make a nest.

Disappointed
For an RSPB product this was disappointing. For starters there were trays missing when the item arrived. The trays do not fit snuggly into the house so any movement could cause them to dislodge.
Mounting fixture is too small for the size and weight of the house. Difficult to attach to wall without the bee house moving around in the breeze once it’s in place.
Sorry RSPB but this is just not up to your usual standards.
RSPB response
We are very sorry for the missing tray and will happily replace. When the two metal brackets are fixed to a flat surface, there is no movement and trays will not dislodge. Approx. 1.5mm space is left on either side of the trays to prevent sticking/damage.

Excellent Quality
I have looked at other bee nesting products and this is by far the best I have seen. It is very sturdy and well made. The bee nesting blocks are smooth. Bought in winter so yet to see if bees use it.
RSPB response
Thank you for your review. It is great to hear that you are happy with the quality of this new solitary bee home from the RSPB!
