Tit nest boxes

RSPB tit nest boxes are enclosed hole-fronted boxes, the standard design for Blue Tits, Great Tits and Coal Tits. The entrance hole size determines which bird moves in: 25mm for Blue Tits and Coal Tits, 32mm for Great Tits. Our Classic nest box comes with a 32mm hole and can be reduced to 25mm using our metal plate accessory.

Tit nest box FAQs

What size hole do I need for a Blue Tit nest box?

A 25mm entrance hole is ideal for Blue Tits, as it allows them easy access while helping to exclude larger birds. Great Tits need a slightly larger 32mm hole. Using the correct hole size is important because it reduces competition for nest sites and helps ensure the right species can use the box safely and successfully.

How can I attract both Blue Tits and Great Tits to my garden?

Use separate nest boxes with different hole sizes to attract different types of tits. Install one box with a 25mm hole for Blue Tits (also suitable for Coal Tits) and another with a 32mm hole for Great Tits. Position them a good distance apart, as both species can be territorial during the breeding season and may compete if boxes are too close together.

Where should I site a Blue Tit nest box?

Blue Tit nest boxes should be sited around 2-4 metres above ground, ideally facing north or east to avoid strong sun and overheating. Choose a quiet spot away from busy paths, doors, and bird feeders, as constant activity can deter nesting birds. A tree trunk, wall, or fence with some nearby cover works well, provided the box is sheltered from strong winds and heavy rain.
