Product description

Help birds create a soft warm spot in nest boxes with this natural British sheep wool pack.

Pop this wool into a suitable spiral or suet feeder or container in the garden and delight as birds use it to help build their nests. Alternatively birds can just use the opening on the front of the box to tease out wool strands.

Sheep's wool is safe for birds and can help keep eggs and young chicks cosy and warm in a nest box, particularly on colder nights.

  • Suitable for wild garden birds.
  • Provide nesting materials between January and July.
  • Approximately 30g.

Danger
After I have seen a young sparrow with a strand of nesting wool still dangling around it's limp foot, I had to remove the apple wool pot from the garden, it's not safe to use

RSPB response

Thank you. We are sorry to hear about the bad experience you had with this. While artificial fibres can present a danger to birds, wool is naturally occurring and will have been used in bird nests for thousands of years.

Fab
We have put it out for the last two years in springs/early summer (took it in from late August each time) in the apple refill pot and it has been very popular with our feathery visitors. Seem to be most popular with the wrens and great tits. I hope it helps their babies to stay warm!

wool tangles around the feet of young
this wool gets tangled around the feet of young birds. Today i found just a leg left of a blue tit that had fledged from the nest only to have ended up hanging in front of the bird box and obviously fell victim to other predators. The leg that was left had its foot well and truly tangled in the wool....poor thing. In future i would recommend using hay instead!

RSPB response: Thank you for your review, and sorry to hear about this blue tit. Just a word of caution that this nesting material should not be put inside the nest box, but left around the garden, or in a wool pot for the birds to collect and use as they wish. If put in to the box in large lumps it could well be a hazard, and we recommend against this. This is natural wool, which is widely used, and has been used by birds for hundreds of years. Birds do not need hay or any other material putting inside a nestbox for them, they can build their own nests.
