Product information

Swifts are notoriously picky when it comes to choosing their nest site.

This new design conforms to all the dimensions required by swifts and has been refined to exact specifications with an expert in swifts. This box is the solution for many of us looking to 'retro-fit' our homes and gardens to be more wildlife friendly. However, if you are embarking on any kind of new build, such as an extension or new house, then a swift brick, built into the fabric of the wall is the preferred option. Refined design

The RSPB Swift nest box fits directly beneath even the narrowest of eaves, and its sloping roof improves durability and makes it hard for predators to gain purchase. Its entry hole measures 28 x 65mm and is designed to keep starlings out, while its internal nest cup will encourage any swift inspecting the box to take up residence.

  • Hand crafted by UK joiners, this swift nest box is made from FSC® certified softwood.
  • Overall measurements are 44cm wide, 21.7cm tall (at the back), 12cm tall (at the front) and 20.2cm deep at the deepest point.
  • Weight is approximately 3.5kg.
  • Supplied with instructions and more details to help you make this an ideal breeding home for these epic adventurers as they seek a safe place in summer.

Where to put the nest box

Swift nests need to have at least 5m clearance from the ground and in front of the box to give a clear flight path to and from the nest. Please ensure your house is able to provide this clearance. Being secured tight beneath the eaves means aspect is not particularly critical and they can face any direction from NE through S to NW.

Do not buy this unless you are Tyson Fury
It weighs over 8 pounds or 3.6kgs. You try attaching it to under the eaves when you are about 20 feet up a ladder and you only have two arms and are not built like a professional boxer. Useless product which is now resting in our shed. Buy a lighter one. No wonder they are on special offer!

Nice looking box, fixing needs some thought.
This is an attractive box but the bare timber, weight and small fixings need some thought before putting it up. The box is quite heavy as it's made from decent timber but apart from the roof is untreated and as my other bird boxes get quite wet it really needs treating to stop rot, which admittedly could take several years. The brackets don't look sturdy enough for the weight of the box, so I'm going to beef up the screws and fit some sort of support underneath. Here's hoping the swifts appreciate my efforts.

Swifts have moved in!
Good quality box, nice and sturdy. I unscrewed the lids and painted the interior black, including the edges of the entrace hole, as I'd read this makes the entrance holes more visible to the swifts and feels more like a dark crevice. I put my box up directly under my gutter in mid-April and used a swift caller to sporadically play recorded calls from the window underneath (I bought it from someone on the All Things Swifts Facebook page, but you can also get CD or MP3 of calls from "Swift Conservation"). Now in late June, I have young birds manically flying around the boxes and going in and out. I don't think they will breed, but hopefully they will remember the nest location and breed next year. My house is stone-fronted and the colour of the wood blends in really nicely.

could do better
Roof painted but rest of box bare wood including end grain which will be susceptible to rotting - had to paint to protect. Very tricky and somewhat dangerous to fix heavy box from a ladder - there are much better solutions for fixing than a very narrow back plate. My owl box was easily fixed using a batten system which meant box was simply overlapped and secured with swivel tabs. Overall I would say expensive for what it is and a DIY box is the way to go if you have the resources.

Difficult to install
While this may have been designed to provide good nesting for swifts, unfortunately little thought has been given to ease of putting it up. As you can see in the photo, there is a bracket on each side to mount it. Unfortunately the screw holes are so near the side of the box, and also near the roof, that it is really difficult to get straight on the screws with a screwdriver or powered screwdriver. And it is dangerous when you are about 8 m up a ladder. This box needs a much easier method for fixing to the wall.

We are sorry to hear this. The fastenings cannot be positioned at the top of the swift box due to the eaves and they must not protrude too far from sides of the box, as this would not be secure. Still, we will pass your feedback to our supplier for review.
