        Hedgehog food FAQs

        What foods can hedgehogs eat?

Hedgehogs eat insects and other invertebrates as their primary source of nutrition. Beetles, earwigs, caterpillars, earthworms, millipedes, and fly larvae make up a common diet in the wild.

What can you feed a hedgehog?

Hedgehogs are opportunistic feeders who will devour anything left out in your garden. The ideal things to give hedgehogs are meat-based Hedgehog foods designed just for them. You can put out a shallow dish of water in addition to food to keep any visiting hogs hydrated.

When do hedgehogs come out to feed?

Hedgehogs are nocturnal animals and will typically sleep during the day and come out to feed at night, so it’s best to put hedgehog food out in the evening, around dusk. In addition to putting out hedgehog food, we recommend leaving a small bowl of water out for them too.

        When to stop feeding hedgehogs?

You can feed hedgehogs all year round, although they are unlikely to require as much food in winter as other times of year as this is when they hibernate. They can wake up during hibernation, either if it gets too cold and they’re in danger of freezing, or if it suddenly gets very warm. When they do wake up, they may forage for food. We would recommend reducing the amount of food you leave out for them during winter, and it’s best to opt for dry food that won’t go off quickly.
