No catsIeal for keeping cats at bay, they leave the pond alone now and have to scoot round the edge of the garden to avoid the device. Batteries work well although need to check for them running out. More efficient with the mains. Definitely would buy again. By Yvonne, on 10 May 2016
Did the trick! Buying a second one!Having had months of clearing up cat poo from our garden, we installed a Catwatch last year (using mains power) and it did the trick. No more cat poo from the 5 cats surrounding our garden! After 8 months though, one clever cat has just found a small section where the sonic tone doesn't reach. So we're about to order a second one to cover off that area. The reality is that one Catwatch unit may not cover an entire section where the cats might roam and poo! So - here's hoping I won't have to scoop up any further poop! By Sue, on 27 Mar 2016
Is it waterproof & ? problem with noctule batsWhen I used Cat Watch initially, it worked but after heavy rain there was water over the battery terminals and I think this stopped it working. I dried it out, covered it with a clear plastic pot (Ex RSPB bird food container) and it's now ok.
I bought mine several years ago but it looks the same, so unless there have been improvements the above could apply.
Could this explain why some find it works and others do not?
I am also trying to find out if it affects noctule bats as the frequencies overlap.
I would expect the RSPB to have mentioned bats rather than hedgehogs!
I get the impression it's a bit on the expensive side. Shame, as it would put a lot of people off.
Manufacturers response: Thank you for your review of our product and it’s good to hear that Catwatch is still working for you after several years.
We are not sure exactly when you bought your unit, but there have been several improvements over the years to the original design, including improved weatherproofing.
There will always be problems with water ingress affecting the battery terminals if the instructions we provide are not followed. As far as Noctule Bats are concerned, our understanding is that this species does not use the frequency range used by Catwatch for echolocation, so there should be no problem.

Catwatch cat deterrent
- Product information
The only cat deterrent tested and approved by the RSPB.
CATWatch, the UK's leading cat deterrent manufactured in the UK, has successfully completed a two-year scientific trial conducted by the RSPB to determine its deterrent effect on cats in residential gardens. The results are published in the Applied Animal Behaviour Science Journal after peer review.
The research concluded that CATWatch reduces cat intrusions into gardens. The longer the unit is in place, the more effective it is.
So....now you are faced with a choice. Some units are cheaper, but may be less durable, less effective and cover a smaller area. CATWatch, on the other hand, is built to last, is a more cost-effective deterrent, proven to work AND tested & approved by the RSPB. It also comes with a two-year guarantee and has been on the market since 1993.
Push the Catwatch ultrasonic cat deterrent into the ground, and when the sensor detects movement it emits a high-pitched sound disliked by most cats (but inaudible to humans). The frequency emitted is unique to cats hearing range, so the Catwatch won't bother other garden wildlife, such as hedgehogs.
It can take up to four weeks for a cat deterrent to become effective, especially if you place it into a cat's established territory. Some cats will see the device as a challenge initially, and it may take a few weeks to put them off coming into your garden.
- Unit 14.5 cm tall, with 16.6 cm ground spike.
- Supplied with a comprehensive instruction booklet with diagrams.
- Passive infra-red sensor detects body movement and heat - so no hiding place for cats.
- Electronic micro-circuitry and computer controlled microchip activates signal as cat enters protected area - and switches off as the animal leaves.
- High quality speaker emits series of modulating ultrasound frequencies 20-24 kHz - repellent to cats.
- On/off switch plus red led light.
- Positioning stake.
- Secure all weather high impact casing.
- - UK made
- - 2 year manufacturer's warranty
Mains or battery-powered: requires either the 12-volt mains adaptor (available separately) or a high-quality 9-volt alkaline battery (not supplied).
Although the Catwatch ultrasonic cat deterrent does work with a high-quality 9V alkaline battery the manufacturers report a 30% increase in alarm noise when the unit is used with a mains adapter.
For maximum power and economy use mains adaptor kit. The mains adaptor is recommended if a lot of people or creatures pass by the unit because this may shorten battery life. (Average battery life - 2 -3 months - requires 1 x 9v high-quality alkaline battery).
Other advantages are: -
i. Maintains operation at peak efficiency as opposed to the declining power of batteries.
ii. The alarm is increased by 30%
iii. Long term economy - costs just a few pence per month to run.
iv. Completely safe - only the thin 30ft 12-volt bell wire runs outdoors to the unit.
Progressively reduces cat intrusions within your garden
Many people find cat-fouling a nuisance. This device is proven to reduce the presence of cats in gardens and the deterrent effect increases over time. Put simply, CATWatch actually trains cats to stay away from your garden. CATWatch does this by emitting a unique ultrasonic alarm, triggered by the cat's movement and body heat as soon as it enters the protected area.
Inaudible to humans
The series of CATWatch alarm frequencies are set above the human hearing range so you can enjoy your garden in complete peace and tranquillity.
Protects up to twice the area of other cat deterrents
One CATWatch unit will protect an area of up to 1,350 sq. ft. - up to twice the area of other makes. Furthermore, many other deterrents simply emit a random or permanent ultrasound signal regardless of whether a cat is present or not, resulting in the deterrent effect reducing over time. That's why many people who have tried other cat deterrents eventually choose CATWatch.
Works in all weather conditions
CATWatch is designed to run trouble free all year round and in all weather conditions from -30 C to +60 C. The low voltage computer controlled micro circuitry is completely sealed inside the unit, the only deterrent with this feature, so that in the unlikely event of water entering inside, it will still continue to function and be absolutely safe to touch.
