Alas no birdsI have had this nest box up for some years and not a single bird has ever looked at it let alone use it to nest. It has now started to fall apart and the two wood panels making the pointed base at the bottom have separated so no hope now of anything even roosting in it.
How do I repair it without using anything that would put the birds at risk?
It is sited according to the advice given and I live on the edge of woodland with hundreds of birds visiting the garden - we counted 23 finches the other day on the feeders. So no shortage of birds.
We also have a nest box my daughter made at school ten years ago that has been in continuous occupation by blue tits ever since we put it up. The birds even nest in our roof.
RSPB Response: Thank you for your review. Unlike the other nest box you have this will only be used by open nesting birds such as robins and wrens. This should be placed lower down in thicker bushes/ivy etc, well obscured from any potential predators. If the entrance is clear and in the open it is far less likely to be used, of course there is no guarantee that the birds will take to a nest box, for many potential reasons. This can be repaired with nails and screws, but do not use any solvents or chemicals as these can be harmful to the birds. By Lc, on 12 Apr 2016
Robin and Wren Nestbox
Robin Nest Box
RSPB Robin and wren diamond nestbox
- Product information
Best-selling, diamond shaped, open-fronted nest box attractive to robins, wrens, pied wagtails and spotted flycatcher.
Beautifully made from FSC timber; roof treated with safe, non-toxic, water-based preservative. UK made.
Installing your nestbox
For secure and stable fixing, there are two hanging tabs attached to the back of the nestbox, one at the top and one at the bottom. These tabs make it quick and easy to securely fix it in place. Screws not supplied.
RSPB nest boxes are made with thick FSC timber and will survive for many years, even without the use of preservatives.
If you do want to protect your nestbox further, use a water-based preservative (preferably one that complies with standard EN71 part 3 as safe for children's toys). Such paint/preservative types are clearly marked on the container, and are available from DIY stores and hardware shops.
Preservatives should only be applied to the outside of the box. Apply in the winter, when there is a low likelihood of occupancy. This will allow time for any remaining volatile components to evaporate.
For more information about siting a nest box please see the Advice section of the main RSPB website.
