First steps to creating your wildlife pond

1. Decide where your pond will go

First find a suitable space in your garden. This will be an area that receives direct sunlight for at least some of the day. Avoid overhanging trees and think about how the site will be safe for people, especially children.

2. Work out how much liner you'll need

Mark the outline of your pond on the ground. Once you know your ideal pond size, you can work out how much pond liner you'll need like this:

Desired pond length + (desired pond depth x 2) = Length of liner required
Desired pond width + (desired pond depth x 2) = Width of liner required

For example, if you'd like a pond that's roughly 2.5m long, 1.5m wide and up to 60cm/0.6m deep:

• 2.5 + (0.6 x2) = 2.5 + 1.2 = 3.7m long liner required
• 1.5 + (0.6 x2) = 1.5 + 1.2 = 2.7m wide liner required

So you would choose the largest pack available, the 4m x 3m kit.
