    Needs an Ultimate version
Unlike 'ultimate' versions, this one won't fit securely into a squirrel guardian. Would need a screw thread on the bottom.

But the existing 'ultimate' one is wider so the squirrels can easily reach the suet, even with the guardian fitted.

Ultimate version of this would be the best of all worlds.

If you don't have hordes of squirrels, this feeder is perfect, by the way.

Still in use after 5 years
Perfectly robust and effective feeder. I suspect Christine has had sneaky squirrels visiting, as that's the only thing that has flipped the top off mine. I am currently looking for one which will take a standard rspb catching tray as the suet makes a greasy, slippery mess on the paving underneath

    A good feeder
It's somewhat hard to review this, as the birds in my garden don't really like suet. However this feeder is cheap, sturdy and does what it says on the tin - and enough birds have visited to chow through 6 suet balls so far, so it seems to be doing the job! I feel like it needs to be narrower though, so that the balls fit in flush and partially-eaten balls aren't so hard to get to.

RSPB response: Hi Alex, thank you for your review we are glad you like your Classic suet ball feeder. Your comments will also be passed onto our product team.

    Not robust enough
This suet feeder is just not robust to cope with aggressive birds. The plastic top fell off and I have had to wire it on.

Simple to use and easy to clean
This is easy to use, easy to clean and very inexpensive. Small birds have no problem hanging in there and eating the suet balls; in fact they seem to love it, and several can eat at the same time. Mine is hung fairly near a seed feeder and they seem to swap depending on where there is space or more food! Given how quickly they get through the seed mix (also from RSPB!) it gives them something to eat if I can't fill the seed feeder fast enough!

    Sturdy and easy to clean
I'm really happy with this feeder and in time will be buying more. I bought two at the same time and both are well made and solid. As other viewers have stated all parts of it are easy to access with no fiddly nooks and crannies, so it's therefore easy to clean, and I have had no problems with the lid. I think they are really good value for the money

    Great Little Feeder
I just checked this feeder and it was empty of the suet balls again. It seems to be popular with the little birds with ease of access to the suet balls. (I just hope its not the mice again.) This seems to be a favorite feeder. Good value and would recommend this.

    Good Quality
I am very happy with the quality of this feeder, particularly for the price. It is sturdy - well made with decent metal. It will stand up to wear and weather well. Its construction makes it easy to clean, and there's nowhere for debris to gather. The House Sparrows here have no problems clinging on and accessing the suet balls! An excellent buy and highly recommended.

    Suets the birds, perfectly!
After reading a few of the reviews on here I was a bit apprehensive about purchasing one of these feeders, but having had my ball feeder stolen by a creature I have yet to identify, I had to replacethe feeder ASAP. The RSPB Cassic Suet Ball Feeder, is sturdy and the lid fits very snugly, so I have no idea what previous complaints and comments were about; unless the model has been adapted and improved. Once you have placed the suet balls inside the feeder, you swing the lid back on top and push it down so that it fits on top of the wire structure. It fits perfectly, so no rattling about. It's easy to do. I just hope this one doesn't go missing too... The birds have been gathered round it ever since I put it up.

    Not well made
I was rather disappointed with the way the lid fits. The idea is good, but the hooks for the metal hanger which holds the lid are in the wrong place (they don't take account of the bend in the metal!) Basic design error, seems like no-one actually tested it. Squeezing the loops together with a pair of pliers improves matters, but the hanger is still not quite aligned with the feeder hooks.

Top Marks for Suet Ball Bird Feeder
This feeder attracted so many birds to my garden, they were queuing up (in a disorderly manner) on the fence to use it. Lid removal and closure took a bit of getting used to but I soon got the hang of it.

    Excellent suet ball bird feeder
This suet ball bird feeder is well worth buying. It is well made and good value for money, it should last me a very long time. This product meets all my expectations for feeding the birds.

    A must-have product
Every bird seems to love fat balls but they must never be put in plastic nets. Buy one of these and everything from tits to starlings will use it. Recommended.
