A beautiful scarf made from soft organic cotton with strong environmental and ethical benefits over non-organic cotton. Here we took inspiration from the amazing sight of a starling murmuration, where hundreds or even thousands of birds swoop and dive together creating mesmerising patterns across the sky. This light blue bird scarf proves that fashion doesn't have to cost the earth.
Cotton is the world's largest non-food crop, and millions of people rely on the industry for survival. However, the environmental impacts of conventional cotton farming can be devestating.
Cotton production uses huge volumes of water, which has led to the loss of habitats around the world - for people and animals. In Kazakhstan for example the Aral Sea that supported a strong local fishing industry and a wealth of wildlife shrunk due to cotton production, leaving a Sea that is only a fraction of what it once was and taking away a place that many called home.
In addition, most fabrics made from cotton rely on farming methods that use harmful pesticides. The run-off from contaminated fields can poison rivers, wildlife and whole communities. Furthermore the cost of these pesticides often leave farmers trapped in debt.
Organic cotton is produced without the use of synthetic fertilisers and pesticides. The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) ensures textiles are produced in a more ecological and socially responsible way.
Look out for the GOTS logo and better alternatives to non-organic cotton when updating your wardrobe.
