    Advice

Keeping your bird feeders clean will help keep your birds healthy, happy and coming back for more.

To clean your feeder you now need to simply twist the base to remove it, then pull the central pin out, which will release the perches. The lid is also easy to remove. You can then clean the tube and perches with suitable disinfectant or mild bleach solution, rinse, then leave to dry.

For more information on how to clean your feeder please take a look at our bird feeder guide.

No spillage nyjer feeder at last!
Does not spill the feed, probably due to the small holes. Lots of the other nyjer feeders do... very happy. Bought it due to advice given at Lochwinnoch RSPB centre pre lockdown-- thanks!!!

    Large Niger Feeder
I bought this feeder a few months ago to replace a plastic feeder i had from a local garden center, which was nawed badly by squirrels. This had attracted a small number Goldfinches which been flying over our garden. However since filling and half filling the large RSPB niger feed not one goldfinch has looked at it. They are feeding from a small standard feeder filled with huskless seeds which i also bought from the RSPB and which has attracted many goldfinches, some times four or five birds together , fighting for access.. I note that several other reviews have mentioned the same problem about birds ignoring the large feeder, can you advise what I could do to bee able to use the feeder effectively.
One alternative i though about was to buy and replace the 4 niger seed ports with the standrd ports but these are not listed in your shop. Another thiig is that whilst cleaning the small feeder have lost the black stick that holds the small feeder ports together as well a the clear plastic bottom screw that holds the plastic waste tray and every thing else together , again neither are listed in your shop list. Have you any advice.

Thank you for your review. Sorry to hear birds have yet to visit this feeder. Birds often take time to adjust to a new feeder so we recommend giving this more time. Please contact our customer services team who will be able to help out with spare parts.

    Poor quality plastic base
I used to work at the RSPB’s Head Quarters in Sandy and bought a six-port metal seed feeder and pole which was built to last and very stable (it’s still going strong after 17 years of constant use and high winds). Having just purchased a large “Ultimate” six-port metal nyjer seed feeder, I’m shocked at how poor quality the plastic base is compared with the rest of the feeder. Upon attaching it to the RSPB’s compatible feeder pole, there’s so much sideways movement I’m expecting it to snap as soon as birds start feeding or it gets windy. Sorry RSPB, but you should have stuck with your original supplier. Very disappointed.

Thank you for your review. Sorry to hear you are disappointed with your purchase. We are not certain what you are referring to here. It sounds like an issue with the pole rather than the feeder. Please can you contact our customer services team to clarify?

    Birds don't like it!
We have had this for over a month now.and the birds don't like it at all. Haven't refilled it since I bought it. They do land on it but I think the star shaped aperture is too small for the bigger finch beaks and they cant get to the seed. We have plenty of goldfinches visiting the bird tables and the other bird feeders but they aren't eating the niger seed from this feeder. No complaints about the quality but maybe the design needs looking at?
    RSPB response
We are glad you are happy with the quality of your feeder, though we are sorry that birds have yet to visit. It can take time for birds to adjust to a new feeder, especially if there is a familiar option available. We recommend giving this more time.

    Brilliant
I brought this nyjer feeder to replace one of those little yellow feeders. Once the goldfinches found it they haven’t been of it, everyday from first light until dusk. It hasn’t rusted and when I lost the rod that holds the feeding perches in place customer service are very happy to replace it. Well worth every penny

    The birds hate it
I had to replace our niger seed feeder which was used constantly by goldfinches. I thought I'd get something really high quality, which would give money back to the RSPB at the same time. This one was really expensive but I thought it'd be worth it. I am so disappointed. This has been up for a good few months now and the birds hate it. They have occasionally looked and tried to feed from it, but they just don't get on with it and the level of seed has not changed at all (I have broken up the seed intermittently and not overfilled, so this isn't the problem). The quality of the product is great, it is nice and study but it simply isn't fit for purpose! I wish I had replaced my niger feeder with a like-for-like, cheap and low quality, but fit for purpose. I am now buying a cheap one to replace this one. The biggest waste of money - and a real shame.
    RSPB response
We are very sorry that you were disappointed with this. This is really strange as we know from testing and positive customer feedback that birds do use these. We would recommend trying a different position in the garden. Please let us know if this helps.

    Great quality feeder
This is a much better quality feeder than others I have bought - perfectly sized and very sturdy with coated metal parts rather than plastic. Within just 2 hours of hanging it in the garden, it attracted not one but two of the elusive goldfinches which have never visited our normal feeders (mixed seed and peanuts). I would highly recommend this nyjer feeder if you want to attract goldfinches!

    Holds too much seed
Goldfinches are daily visitors in my garden. I bought this tall, four port feeder a few years ago. The birds didn't use it much, after initial interest. I now realise that there was so much seed in the full column that it sets into a block. This was happening for the top ports as well as the bottom ones. I have now taped over the top ports and fill the tube below this. The finches are now clearing this amount in a couple of days and the seed flows freely. I should have bought the short feeder in the first place.
    RSPB response
Thank you. The quantity of seed consumed will depend on a number of factors (e.g. bird numbers, availability of food). It does sound like our small feeder would have been better in your garden, though we are glad you found a solution!

Great size feeder really easy to clean
I bought this feeder as I have lots of goldfinches visit my garden and wanted something I could clean easily . This feeder is perfect due to the size and even better with the extra perching rings.

    great for gold finches
I have had this feeder for nearly 2 years and found it's great for gold finches and occasional green finch and siskin. They love it and food disappear in about 4 days so no issues with size of hoeles. It has survived squirrel but I do hang it on a weak branch too deter it (branch won't take squirrel weight). However even on the more sturdy post near house the squirrel hasn't got into it but the birds prefer the one hanging in trees further from house.

    great for gold finches
I have two of the small ones, about to buy a third. Brilliant for gold finches or gold crest and the odd other bird. I have found them to be easy to fill and clean. They are too small for the big birds to target (I have found all the bigger feeders seem to attract the bigger birds) and the squirrel has been unable to get in although he has tried. Ocassionally he will knock one off and gobble the contents but the feeder has remained in tact. I think they are great

    Have abandoned this.
The birds used this at first but it didn't need refilling for months as they appeared to have difficulty getting any seeds out. The birds have now given up and use the regular one instead. There is something wrong with the design of this feeder and it's proved an expensive waste of money.

    Not good I'm afraid
Bought a large and a smaller one. Such poor quality and so overpriced for what you get. Have had to modify both in order to keep them in one piece after some minor attacks from squirrels - which has to be expected. Have consoled myself about the cost by thinking that at least I have made a large donation to the RSPB funds,
    VERY DISAPPOINTING !

RSPB response: We are really sorry to hear about your experiences with the Nyjer feeders, we did test them extensively and found the birds used them without issue. However we are looking into the design to see where we can improve.

    Disappointed
The squirrels broke the last nyjer feeder I bought (£3.99 ready filled) by chewing through the plastic seed holes, although it took them many months to do so, so I decided to get a metal sturdy one. However, although the metal is impervious to squirrel teeth, the paint is not and my main criticism is that the holes for the feed are too big so the seeds fall out and the squirrels can just get them out of the feeder, defeating the object of a metal construction. Also the plastic tube does not fit neatly at the bottom and the seeds escape from it. So overall very disappointed especially with the cost and will be reverting to a £3.99 feeder once a year.....

Well made, but the birds don't use it
This is a very well made product, but I am really disappointed because the birds won't feed from it.
I bought it (and some niger seed) specifically to try to attract goldfinches, which we have never seen in our garden. Within seconds of putting it out (literally - I had only just got back indoors), two goldfinches appeared and landed on the feeder but, after looking at it they flew off without feeding and have not reappeared. Other birds have landed on it but flown off immediately.
I have since put the niger seed in an old 'standard' feeder and it is finally being eaten (not by goldfinches yet).
I think it would be better to use a standard feeder with a seed tray.
