    Poor Design
Despite the RSPB response to the previous review, I have to say that I completely agree that there is a fundamental flaw in that the opening for the feed is too large and, therefore, at the slightest sign of rain or drizzle the entrance clogs up.
This is actually nothing to do with drying it properly before use!! It's to do with English weather, for which this feeder is unsuited.
There are better designs on the market with a tiny hole at the base and no catch area for rain - I suspect you lose a bit more seed this way, but at least it stays dry in poor weather.

RSPB response: Thank you for your review, sorry that you are disappointed with this feeder. If you feel your product was faulty please contact customer services who will be able to help. We have recently launched a new Ultimate Nyjer feeder range with smaller opening for the seed, the design also allows the seed to flow more freely inside the tube reducing the chance of blockages.

    OK but has design flaw
It took 4 weeks before any birds went near it but now we have regular visits from a couple of goldfinches. They are the only birds that seem to have worked out how to extract the seeds.
The main problem with this feeder is that the nyjer seeds do not automatically slide down to fill the space left when the birds extract seeds. Consequently, there comes a point when the birds cannot get any more seeds out of it. To rectify this, it is necessary to tap the feeder once or more a day in order to get the seeds to shift down so the birds can get to them. This may be more a function of the seeds than the feeder design but I am using RSPB nyjer seeds so you'd think these should be compatible with the feeder!

RSPB response - Thanks for your review. Nyjer is a very fine seed, which clogs easily in damp or humid conditions. When you clean your feeder, make sure it is completely dry before you refill it.

    Finally!
I noticed a pair of goldfinches flitting about the neighbourhood and thought I'd invest in a feeder.

I didn't notice the screw in perches were unscrewed which caused a bit of a boo boo when I filled it and upon closer inspection realised one of the perches only tightens so far before it becomes loose again.

I tentatively hung it out and despite the starlings bashing it about it hasn't fallen apart. Today, about 4 weeks later, a goldfinch rocked up for some seed. Now it just needs to eat the rest of the 3kg bag.

    Has fallen apart
I am afraid that I have had this less than a month and the metal bars have kept unscrewing and the feeding hole falls out with all the seed. This last time I have lost the bar so I am having to throw it away. I will look elsewhere for am different style. At moment I have seen no finches but then the container is permanently empty so I have no idea if it would work. It has been a waste of money and seed.

    Great feeder saves seed
I used to have a Niger feeder withe a slit in the side. After months of waiting, gold finches came and fed but wasted vast amounts of seed. I bought this feeder and the birds changed straight away no bother and seed wasted has been dramatically reduced. I think that the feeder is expensive especially as I paid £3 above the RSPB price at my garden centre. Good feeder does the job strong construction.

    Goldfinches Galore!
I have been feeding the birds for at least five years but rarely saw a goldfinch anywhere in my garden. A couple of weeks ago, I noticed a couple of greenfinches eating the sunflower hearts on my seed feeder followed by several goldfinches. So in my next RSPB order, I included the nyjer feeder and seed, along with the small seed tray. Now the goldfinches outnumber all the other birds and although they seem just as fond of the sunflower hearts, they are eating the nyjer seed from this feeder. I hope they're still here for the Big Garden Birdwatch!

    Goldfinches ignore this feeder
Frequent regular goldfinch visitors to my garden use the old feeder but not this one.

Disappointing - my many visiting goldfinches avoid it
I bought this in December 2012. I have hung it in my garden alongside or further away from a competitor's nyjer product that has looped perches rather than the single projection as a perch. Throughout the previous 18 months I have continued to have regular and frequent visits to my garden from groups of goldfinches and have refilled the older competitor product many times. The RSPB product has been completely ignored by the goldfinches. I have refilled it, and checked the nyjer seed is dry and can flow out of the ports, but I cannot find any reason why this is happening.
