Mediterranean gulls are similar to the more-common black-headed gull, but they’re larger with an all-black head in the breeding season. They were an unusual sight in the UK until the 1950s, but their numbers have risen spectacularly in recent years. RSPB Langstone Harbour in Hampshire supports a large portion of their UK breeding population, with over 1,700 pairs, but their numbers are also growing at RSPB Minsmere and RSPB Titchwell Marsh. For Emma, these unusual birds caught her eye and imagination, and for her they stand still on a Moorcroft vase, ready to take flight at any moment.
