Malcolm Appleby Sparrow silver pendant

RSPB > Gifts & home > Clothing & accessories > Fashion accessories > Jewellery
The humble house sparrow isn't so humble any more. Celebrated engraver and silversmith, Malcolm Appleby, has created three beautiful pieces of silver jewellery – a pendant, brooch and bangle – to raise money for the conservation of Glasgow's 'speuggies'. This is the second collaboration between Malcolm and the RSPB following on from the success of Malcolm's capercaillie brooch and pendant, commissioned especially to support the conservation of these enigmatic birds.

The inspiration for the design came from the house sparrows in Malcolm's own garden in Perthshire, Scotland. 'There is a constant chatter and cheeping from the holly tree where they all gather', says Malcolm, 'so, of course that is part of the design too.'

The silver sparrows will generate much needed funds for House Sparrow conservation, starting initially in Glasgow, but hopefully longer term to support similar conservation projects across the UK cities. Funds from the sale of this jewellery will enable a network of dedicated volunteers survey and conserve Glasgow's house sparrows.
