Benro Wild 1 aluminium birding tripod

The latest tripod kit to be added to the Benro range has been created for those with a passion for wildlife and nature.

When watching birds and wildlife, spotting scopes allow close observation but need a stable and secure platform. The Benro Wild series combines a superb tripod, together with a new and improved 2-way pan and tilt head (the BWH4) finished in sleek black.

The BWH4 head is designed to support a maximum weight of 4kgs, more than enough to support any of our RSPB scopes and those of other top brands. The head offers smooth, fluid movement to allow accurate pan & tilt movements while following moving subjects, it includes an Arca-compatible quick release plate with 1/4” thread and VHS Pin for perfect alignment. The QR plate will slide to allow the centre of gravity to be changed when spotting scopes are used with cameras for digiscoping.

A great replacement for my old Kowa
I bought this scope online to replace a 40-year old Kowa TSN1 that had had one knock too many, and was just getting too heavy. I use my scope for WEBS counts and for annual monitoring of a peregrine eyrie for the BTO Nest Record Scheme, as well as for casual birding. So far, having been using it for a month, I'm delighted with both the scope and the tripod (I went for the combined deal).

Weight - noticeably lighter than the Kowa. Optics - pin sharp focus, at both ends of the 20-60 zoom, colour perfect. I particularly like the dual-action focus. My peregrine nest is 180 metres from the viewing position, and having used the scope 3 times I'm finding it excellent - my birds have yet to lay, but I can see clearly into the nest. I'm finding it much sharper than my old scope (which had a newer 20-60 zoom on the old body, in retrospect an unwise investment).

A well-designed case. The tripod has more controls than my last one, but all perfectly intuitive, just a question of getting used to it. The legs have twist rather than snap lever tightening (which my last one had) which is much better. Having used it a couple of times in very windy conditions it appears quite stable. The tripod also has a carrying case, which is handy for my nest monitoring.

Very competitive price - you could pay a lit more and not get a significantly better scope. Highly recommended.
