Very well made but attracts squirrels.
I wanted to keep out jackdaws and wood pigeons which it does do. I have seen our robin and sparrows use it but mainly the squirrels. We are in a city garden and the squirrel effortlessly goes through the mesh and eats everything. I do think you should say that it is not squirrel proof. I am now buying a small mesh cover. Please change description as it is a pricey buy.
    RSPB response
Thank you. We are sorry to hear that you were disappointed with this. We do say that this wide mesh sanctuary is for excluding predators and deterring large birds only. I will pass your feedback to the web team and see if we can add a line on squirrels.

    vermin attractor
BE WARNED. The cage does not exclude larger birds AT ALL. It has been raided by seagulls, wood pigeons, and soon attracted feral pigeons, all reaching their necks through very happily to get the seed in the middle. In fact, the only birds that have hopped stupidly round the outside and NOT been able to get in have been the blackbirds for whom I bought it. Yesterday I saw a huge rat in the garden for the first time ever. In other words, it is a vermin attractor. I have now had to order in a specialist to deal with the rats at the cost of £100, so a useless object has cost me dear. Perhaps it is just not suitable in small gardens in towns.

Thank you. We are sorry to hear that you were disappointed with this. This is our widest gauge sanctuary, we also sell a narrow gauge and an adjustable sanctuary, which is our narrowest. We will pass your feedback to the product team.

    A feast for the squirrel
I wish I had read the reviews before purchasing this! Have just sat and watched the squirrel climb in through the mesh and eat pretty much all of the food - or carry it away to store it for later. It really isn’t fit for purpose! Can I return it even though it has been used and out in the rain? We bought the larger mesh because we wanted to encourage blackbirds, thrushes and similar. I have always found products from the RSPB to be good value and excellent purchases in the past.

Had to adapt it quite a lot
Although the removable base made cleaning easy, it meant that any food that's there during a downpour ends up a soggy mess like porridge and could go mouldy if left. Also had a problem as the squirrels sat in the cage and took the cross pieces apart. I have now replaced the base with mesh from an old groundfeeder and nailed it and the cross pieces in place. This means that food can dry out if it gets wet and there are 4 permanent sections for the birds to enjoy the food and the squirrels can't destroy it.. I keep it clean with a stiff brush across the (now) mesh base.
This is a very sturdy groundfeeder and cage but the loose base and easily removable cross pieces do not seem fit for purpose.

Many thanks for your detailed review. It's great that you are happy with many features of this and we are glad that you have managed to adapt others to your needs. The cage should deter most adult squirrels, though some juveniles can squeeze through!

    Large mesh cage
I found like others that pigeons etc can put their heads through t get at the food. However, to counter this, I put plastic covered wire, along the bottom line of holes, about halfway between bottom and top of the frame. This allows smaller birds to get in if the want but stops the pigeons etc from getting their heads through but does not harm them. It is in fact quite funny to watch the pigeons etc try and wok out how they can get at the food, as they see the smaller birds, blackbirds and below, easily access the food. Do have a problem with a squirrel, as might try and restict nect leven of holes, but they are clever enough to do a work around. I didnt go for the small 'holed' version as I wanted to ensure blackbirds were fed. I have oly been using it for a short while, and I get quite a few varieties of birds, including blackbirds, male and female, sparrow, robins, bluetits, evena goldfinch on one occasion. I have note quite a few young birds mainly sparrows, using he feeder. So if you have a problem with pigeons accessing the food, try my work around. Doesnt harm them.
    RSPB response
Thank you. It is great to hear that the birds are enjoying the ground feeder. The sanctuary reduces competition from larger birds and the threat of predation. If pigeons are gaining limited access, smaller birds should still enjoy the advantage here.

    ground feeder and cage
The squirrel ate everything inside the first morning. Not fit for purpose.
    RSPB response
Thank you for your review. We are sorry to hear that you are disappointed with your purchase. We do recommend the Narrow Mesh Sanctuary for squirrels, as this should exclude most adults and larger birds and predators.

    Expensive mistake
Wish I had read the other reviews before purchasing. Not fit for purpose as squirrels, pigeons and magpies can still get to the feeding station. Cage also feels flimsy and poor quality. Would not recommend this product.
    RSPB response
Thank you for your review, we are very sorry you are disappointed with your purchase. We have a 90 days return policy for any unsatisfied customers. The cage is made to exact specifications to deter large birds though some may get through.

    Great ground feeder
Within days of installing robins and blackbirds were using the feeder without seed making a mess on the lawn or being gobbled up by greedy pigeons. The wire mesh also protects from nosey dogs and cats! The black liner is easy to clean.
    RSPB response
RSPB response: Thank you for your review so pleased that the ground feeder is encouraging the songbirds to feed without competition from larger birds and threat from predators.

    Great for pigeons and squirrels
The wide mesh protector is great for the blackbirds. Traditionally they have come a poor second to feral and wood pigeons and squirrels when it comes to feeding.
However, like the previous reviewer has discovered, the squirrels still get through and because the mesh cage is only a bit wider than the table the pigeons poke their heads through and still carry on feeding.
A small change in the dimensions of the table (does it have to be so large?) so that the distance between the edge of the table and the mesh cage is larger than a pigeon can reach would make it a far better design.
As for the squirrels, just about anything devised by humans has been proved to be virtually useless against squirrels.

    Not the best combination
Unfortunately the mesh is big enough for the squirrels to climb through and the dimensions of the feeder means that there is very little space between it and the edge of the protector. As a result the squirrels and magpies are having a field day a d blackbirds don't get a look in. Rather an expensive mistake to make but no longer have the box to return to swap for the smaller mesh.
    RSPB response
Thank you for your review. The wide mesh should deter most adult squirrels and large birds but please contact customer services if you wish to swap to the narrow mesh, it is not a problem to change.
