The avocet has long been part of the RSPB logo. As well as being a beautiful bird, it also symbolises the bird conservation movement of the past century. The deliberate flooding of areas in East Anglia in the 1940s provided a perfect wetland habitat for a bird which had been extinct in the UK for over a century previously. Minsmere in Suffolk is a particularly great place to see avocets today.
Our In the Shallows range draws attention to two of our most distinctive wading birds, the avocet and oystercatcher.
