Part of our organic cotton scarf collection, inspired by nature. This fun yet delicate RSPB organic cotton scarf in pale lilac is made from soft organic cotton with strong environmental and ethical benefits over non-organic cotton, proving that fashion doesn't have to cost the earth.
Cotton is the world's largest non-food crop, and millions of people rely on the industry for survival. However, the environmental impacts of conventional cotton farming can be devestating.
Cotton production uses huge volumes of water, which has led to the loss of habitats around the world - for people and animals.
In addition, most fabrics made from cotton rely on farming methods that use harmful pesticides. The run-off from contaminated fields can poison rivers, wildlife and whole communities.
Furthermore the cost of these pesticides often leave farmers trapped in debt.
Organic cotton is produced without the use of synthetic fertilisers and pesticides. The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) ensures textiles are produced in a more ecological and socially responsible way.
Water use is monitored, with targets set to reduce water consumption and increase efficiency more sustainably. Pesticides are not used, encouraging more wildlife-friendly farming. Social criteria are also required: Minimum wages, safe working conditions, and fair working hours. Using a natural fibre like cotton means microplastics leeching from fabrics into our waterways is not an issue.
Look out for the GOTS logo and better alternatives to non-organic cotton when updating your wardrobe.
