RSPB > Bird care > Bird houses & nest boxes > Garden bird nest boxes

Simply styled, sturdily made FSC ® certified timber nest box. Like all our nest boxes, it's made with thick timber for insulation with a roof designed to prevent rain water running down the inside of the box. The 32mm entrance hole, makes it suitable for many bird species.

Side opens for easy end-of-season cleaning. UK made.

    Installing your nest box

For secure and stable fixing, there are two hanging tabs attached to the back of the nest box, one at the top and one at the bottom. These tabs make it quick and easy to securely fix it in place. Screws not supplied.

Which size nest box hole for which bird?
25mm - blue tit, coal tit, marsh tit
32mm - great tit, tree sparrow, pied flycatcher, house sparrow, nuthatch, lesser spotted woodpecker. 32mm entry holes can, if you wish, be reduced to 25mm using a nest box plate (R0110).

RSPB nest boxes are made with thick FSC ® certified timber and will survive for many years, even without the use of preservatives.
If you do want to protect your nest box further, use a water-based preservative (preferably one that complies with standard EN71 part 3 as safe for children's toys). Such paint/preservative types are clearly marked on the container, and are available from DIY stores and hardware shops.
Preservatives should only be applied to the outside of the box. Apply in the winter, when there is a low likelihood of occupancy. This will allow time for any remaining volatile components to evaporate.
For more information about siting a nest box please see the Advice section of the main RSPB website.

      Excellent product
I considered building my own box using the instructions on the RPSB website but when I priced the timber and other bits plus the hassle it simply wasn't worth the effort. This box is amazing value for such a solid and well built item.
I agree with one other reviewer - there were no instructions on siting the box in mine either, but this information is on the RSPB website.
The side panel does lift beautifully for cleaning, contrary to what is stated in another review, once you've unscrewed the two screws.
Can't wait to fix it up in the garden.

RSPB response: Thank you for your great review, we are pleased to hear how impressed you are with this nest box.

      Excellent nestbox
Very sturdy and well put together. Our blue tits clearly also think so - three of them were investigating the box within an hour of it being put up. We bought metal plates as well and have fitted them to one of the boxes at the moment, so we'll see how that goes as we have both squirrels and woodpeckers around. Given that this box is great value for money yet hopefully raises a reasonable amount for the RSPB (the whole point of the shop!), the extra £2.50 for the plate isn't a problem.
The opening side looks good for easy cleaning, you just need to read the bumph to know its there.

      Cleaning Challenge
Bird box arrived, I fitted it with the top and bottom metal plates to a tree and a pair of tits nested. Great. I cannot now unscrew the screws to take the box down to clean it. It is stuck to the tree. Other bird boxes I have bought have a tear drop hole at the back which means I can mount and demount the box for cleaning easily. Thus I have no option but to 'destroy' the box in order to clean it. Or leave it in what is a good nesting spot and never clean it. Its SO easy to get these things right - and as a novice I went to RSPB thinking someone would have done the thinking for me. The fixings are entirely unsuitable for something that has to be removed annually. Not recommended and I check carefully for other boxes I have bought to ensure this method is not used. Disappointed.

RSPB Response: Thank you for your review. These boxes can be easily opened for cleaning, as per the instructions included. There are two screws at the base of one side of the box that simply need to be loosened, which allows the side panel to be completely pivoted open for cleaning. This can be done when the box is on the wall/tree or when taken down. This is more secure than other methods and still allows easy access.

      OK I guess
A classic case of spoiling the ship for a halfpennyworth of tar. Yes, it is sturdily constructed and reasonably attractive. Presumably it will last (though it has to be questionable whether bare pine will resist the rain and snow for long before rotting). BUT: it needs a metal plate to protect the entrance from predators ... not supplied and has to be bought seperately; there is a side panel for opening it for cleaning ... but this has been fixed with screws driven in carelessly with a power tool, leading to damage to the wood and poses a daunting prospect when it needs removing; there are no fixing screws supplied ... tough on you if you do not have some to hand; finally, although it is not difficult to work out, there are no instructions for fixing or siting it ... not the most helpful of approaches for a first timer. All in all, with just a little more care and thought, this could have been a great nest box ... as it is, it leaves an impression of too many corners cut in pursuit of profit

      RSPB response:
Thank you for your review. Instructions should be included in the box. If you contact us we will be happy to send some. The box does not need a metal plate for all scenarios - for example in gardens without squirrels or other predators. If we were to include the plate for everyone it would make the price more expensive for people who perhaps did not want it. We do not supply fixing screws as the type of screw required will be different for different hanging sites, for example wood, concrete or brick.

We can assure you that we do not cut corners in pursuit of profit. As the RSPB we make sure that the nest box is well designed and made, with quality materials, and then other factors come after this is achieved.

If you are unhappy with this box please contact Customer Services who will be happy to help.

      Good Value
A really sturdy nest box for the price. Bought one in 2013 and within days it was inspected and a nest started even though it was late April. Sadly the female changed her mind but we did get a roosting Blue Tit later that year. Would recommend that a suitable preservative is used, outside only, before installation as ours needed treatment after the first season..
The roof of the box is fastened by pins not screws and this started to lift off so feel RSPB could rectify this cheaply. Also another fixing at the bottom would be useful as it was difficult to get the box to lie flat against the brick wall. Know this will increase the cost a little but customers would not might paying an extras couple of pounds for something that with the right care will last years. Bought another in 2014 now with camera and we have had our first nest and chicks.

      RSPB response:
Many thanks for your review. We have added another bracket to the bottom of the nest box in the past year so any boxes sold now or in the future will have most of those problems covered. If a preservative is used please make sure that it is a suitable, water based, preservative and that it is not used around the entrance hole or on the inside of the box.

      not weatherproof
We have just opened up the box to clear out old nest, to find that the base and sides are saturated inside. I would have thought that this should not be so?

      RSPB response:
As wood is a natural material, and as it has a hole in the front, it will never be completely waterproof. Water will not get through the roof, however, as it has a wildlife friendly protective paint, and as the wood is 18mm thick solid pine it will be pretty well protected. The best way to ensure a nest box stays dry is to position it facing north-west, away from the wettest, prevailing wind. Some water will inevitably find its way into any nestbox, but as these have suitable drainage and ventilation to prevent condensation forming it will not be an issue.

      Excellent
I put this box up in April, and it was very quickly occupied by a family of great tits. They successfully reared a large brood, and I was even lucky enough to watch them fledge! I did not have any problems with great spotted woodpeckers attacking the box, even though they are daily visitors to my bird feeders. Will be back for another box soon.

      An extremely well crafted product.
An extremely well crafted product. The metal plate around the entry hole has prevented the woodpeckers from damaging the nestbox. All our nestboxes (6) were used this summer. One minor point to note is that the countersunk hole on the metal plate for attachiing the birdbox to a wall is the wrong way round, but this is not a real problem.

      Disappointing
Box was very easy to assemble and within a few weeks, a pair of blue tits moved in. Unfortunately, after the blue tits had been resident for a few weeks, a great spotted woodpecker started to peck at the hole each morning. The woodpecker managed to break through within two days and took away the chicks. Therefore, I would recommend that anyone who purchases this product also researches ways to reduce/prevent woodpecker attacks, since the box was not strong enough to withstand them for more than two days.

RSPB response - We use 18-20 mm solid pine for these nestboxes, which is thicker than the nest box recommended wood thickness of 15 mm. We use this thicker wood to make them stronger and more resilient to predators and the elements, although of course this will never stop a woodpecker which is naturally adapted to do as you describe. We sell metal nest box plates (R0110 - 25 mm and R0111 – 32 mm) to reinforce the hole entrance, which we would recommend if squirrels or woodpeckers are present in your garden.

      Does what is designed for!
Bought this box to set up this year with a camera. Went to RSPB because I knew they were the best to buy from, they know their onions or their birds I should say! Durable box, well made and has designer logo on the front expecially for the most decerning of birds.
Installed box end of 2012 and by golly by Feb 13 I had a pair of Blue Tits who had claimed this Des-Res. Now I have purchased another with larger hole to hopefully attract a Great Tit. Looking forward to watching them use this fantastic box. Thanks RSPB you're great - keep up the good work.
