This Classic style FSC ® certified timber 32mm entry hole nestbox is suitable for a wide range of garden birds.

If you want to exclude larger species you can reduce the entrance hole to 25mm with a nest box plate (R0110).

Made in the UK with thick FSC ® certified timber for strength and durability, this box has good insulation properties, with drainage holes and a side panel, secured with a screw, that pivots open for easy end-of-season cleaning.

    Installing your nestbox

For secure and stable fixing, there are two hanging tabs attached to the back of the nestbox, one at the top and one at the bottom. These tabs make it quick and easy to securely fix it in place. Screws not supplied.

Which size nest box hole for which bird?
25mm - blue tit, coal tit, marsh tit
32mm - great tit, tree sparrow, pied flycatcher, house sparrow, nuthatch, lesser spotted woodpecker. 32mm entry holes can, if you wish, be reduced to 25mm using a nest box plate (R0110).

RSPB nest boxes are made with thick FSC ® certified timber and will survive for many years, even without the use of preservatives.
If you do want to protect your nestbox further, use a water-based preservative (preferably one that complies with standard EN71 part 3 as safe for children's toys). Such paint/preservative types are clearly marked on the container, and are available from DIY stores and hardware shops.
Preservatives should only be applied to the outside of the box. Apply in the winter, when there is a low likelihood of occupancy. This will allow time for any remaining volatile components to evaporate.
For more information about siting a nest box please see the Advice section of the main RSPB website.

Gaps have appeared after 1 year
I bought the Apex nestbox last year and had Great Tits nesting early this year. Have just cleaned out the box but noticed that gaps have appeared on the Apex roof and side of the box where the two pieces join together. Have put the box back up but am worried that rain could get in and harm the birds if they nest next season.

RSPB response: Thank you for your review, I am sorry to hear about the gaps appearing in your box. Please can you contact our customer service team who will be able to assist you with this as it sounds like your box may be faulty.

    Apex classic nestbox
Received one as a welcome gift for joining the RSPB , A beautiful well made box. I put it up last year for the first time and was rewarded with blue tits rearing a family. We have just removed it to clean it this week but there is no way into it that we can see to do this. Is this us being silly or is it a bad design. Seems like we have to break it to get into it !!

RSPB response: Thank you for your review, glad to here that you had occupants in the first year. There should be two screws on the side, if you unscrew these you should be able to clean the nest box easily. If this is not the case please contact customer services who will be able to help.

    Superior nest box
Now this is what I call a nest box. Sturdy construction, precision made and a sensible size to accommodate a large brood of small birds. Have installed it facing NE and can't wait for Spring to see results. A small observation - the ends of the mounting brackets should really be countersunk on opposite sides but how pedantec is that ?

    Blue tit neighbours
Bought two of these nest boxes last autumn to place on the side of the house and in the last couple weeks two pairs of blue tits have moved in.
Very well made bird houses and the two brackets makes for easy sitting.

    WOW!!
This is an amazing nestbox. Very well made, very attractive, for birds as well as humans! We have a pair of blue tits constantly bringing nesting material into it, which have been doing this for over a week! Never had nesting birds in the garden before, so this is great!

RSPB response: Hi Daniel, thank you for your review. It is great to hear that you are enjoying your Apex classic nestbox and that you have birds nesting in your garden.

    Ok
The nest box looked solid enough when it came out of the box, but turning it over, there was a crack from the entrance hole to the bottom. Not too wide and we have put it up, but I doubt it will last as long as expected. Would certainly think twice about buying it again

RSPB Response: Many thanks for your review. If there was a crack down the front of the box this is a fault, and we will of course replace any faulty items. This can happen with wood occasionally, but please contact customer services and they will help. We use very thick and high quality wood on our boxes and they should last a long period of time compared to many others on the market.

    Beautiful nest box
Lovely nest box which I received as my free gift upon joining the RSPB - thank you! It is beautifully made and feels very sturdy. I only put it up yesterday but this morning noticed a blue tit poking its head inside to have a look! Not sure if it's moved in yet, but hopefully it will return!

    Well made nest box
This nest box is so much better than the ones you can buy in the shops, solid construction and thick wood make for a very sturdy home for our feathered friends. Well worth the money and very pleased with the product.

    Apex Nestbox
The day after we put this box up we had a pair of blue tits peeking in. Might buy a nestbox plate so the blue tits will feel safe and nest. Overall a very good sturdy product.

    Solid, well made product.
Even though this is more expensive than most in garden centres, pet shops, DIY stores I decided to buy one for comparison with the thought that if it was the at least the same standard then the profits would go to a good cause. Very impressed, the quality and strength of the material far exceeds those in the various stores. The vents under the eaves of the apex roof, the drainage channels and holes and the simple removal of two screws to lift the side panel and clean are all well designed. The fixing brackets seem strong enough but will need to see how these last over a period of time. Will definitely be buying more.

Works as it says .. and more
Purchased this just in time for some blue tits to nest last season - saw them flying in and out, and sure enough when I cleaned it today (Feb 2015) found a complete nest of moss and hair with a few left over feathers. I too was pleasantly surprised to find that you can unscrew the left hand side (seen from the front) to hinge open the whole side for easier cleaning. I'd been expecting having to take the box off the wall so was very glad that was unnecessary. Surely this should be a selling point that is mentioned in the description?
Altogether well made, no problems fixing with the metal piece and a screw (not supplied). I expect it to last for many years to come. I do think it's good value for money too.

    Great value
Have just bought this nest box after looking on-line at other sites, they all had confusing dimensions so bought from the people who should know.
Can not recommend the RSPB highly enough, I am so glad I bought this nest box from them. It is solid and very well made. Many thanks RSPB.

    apex nesting box
just purchased 2 of the blue tit apex nesting boxes,at a cost of £13.25 each plus p&p.i looked at various sites on the internet and read a lot of the peoples reviews and I could not make my mind up were to purchase them from.there were some nesting boxes cheaper and some dearer,so I decided to purchase them from the RSPB site as I thought they would only sell the nesting boxes that ticked all the boxes as regards the size of the box and the entrance hole etc.how pleased I was with my decision to buy them from the RSPB site, they arrived 2 days after I ordered them and the workmanship and quality is first class,i am highly delighted with my purchase and can recommend them to any one who is looking to buy one.they are that well made they will last for years.the one thing I did do though was to put another bracket at the bottom of the box so they are now more secure on my walls were I fixed them.i know I wont get any thing in them this year as it is nearly the end of may,but I put them up for the blue tits etc to let them know that they are there for future years.go on spoil your selves and buy one.

    Extremely happy.......Apex in situ.
Within 30 minutes of the Apex Box being place on the tree a Blue Tit came to investigate, so finger's crossed and binoculars at the ready.

The box itself is very strong and sturdy but we did put an extra L shape bracket on the base and screwed it onto the Silver Birch tree to make sure it was going nowhere.

    I would definitely recommend it.

No idea how to fix to a tree or post?
No obvious fixing holes, supports or suggestions for fixing. I guess I can just partly undo the screw at the back and attach it with wire or something. Should not need to mess around with a drill. (on my own and not into DIY)
Needs modifying to be more user friendly.
Received as free gift for joining RSPB. Sorry would not buy as it is.

RSPB response - Thanks for your review. Sorry to hear you were not happy with the product. The Apex Nestboxes comes with a metal tab at the back that swings around to clear the top of the box, this tab has a hole pre-drilled in it so that all you need to do is screw it to your chosen location and the tab can be seen at the top of the photo. There is no need to use a drill or wire to put these nest boxes up.

Nest box Great but bracket poor
This will be my second purchase of this box, the fist, last winter, provided a home for a pair of blue tits who successfully reared a family, its now Jan 29th and a pair of blue tits are already inspecting the box, its still got the nest inside. I decided we need another so we can rear two families this year. Bad bracket but it worked so what the heck.

    Great Gift - thank you!
We saved our joining gift from the RSPB to put up at our new home. We are delighted that a family of Blue Tits has been raised in it this year. Whilst we saw Mum and Dad doing their duty to the babies we did not see them fledge and can only assume that they are now gone. How long should we leave it before cleaning it out as the flies seem to be the only visitors now? Thank you

RSPB response - thanks for your review. Birds often have two of more broods each year, so please wait until the breeding season is finished before cleaning. For more information please see our nestbox buying guide http://shopping.rspb.org.uk/nestboxes

    RSPB Apex nestbox
A very well made and solid box; I was impressed with the quality of the item, especially considering the price. I didn't think the single mounting bracket at the top would be strong enough, so I removed it and added two L-shaped brackets, one below each eave.

Great box, poor fixings, no instructions
This is a well-designed, sensibly priced box. A couple of things would make it a world-beater - the fixing bracket is very poor (a triangular one would spread the load). One side swivels out (a great feature) for cleaning, but the strange absence of instructions makes this a 'discovery' feature.

    Perfect nest box!
I received this nest box free when I joined the RSPB. I put it straight up on my house wall and within a few days, the bluetits were building a nest. It's a very sturdy box and easy to clean when you remove the side screw (which I've just done as the baby birds have just flown the coop!). It really is a great product!

    Apex nest box fixing bracket
The box itself is good but the bracket isn't sufficiently strong. One of mine was blown off in the wind with a nest inside. If the fixing arrangement was stronger it would be perfect - as it is, you need to make some stronger arrangement for fixing it to the tree.

I Have Blue Tits in Mine
I put mine up last year and nothing nested in it but this year I have blue tits and I am hoping they will return year after year. With the removal of one screw the whole side panel hinges up for easy cleaning at the end of the breeding season.
