RSPB > Bird care > Feeding stations

Our feeding station is a best-seller over and over again. With three hooks to hang feeders, a water bowl and a mesh feed tray, it's a fantastic all-in-one solution to feeding garden birds - and a great gift.

We had this delightful, great-value bird feeding station specially adapted to our safety specifications, so there are none of the bird foot traps you might find on similar models.

Assembly is easy: the 23 mm diameter pole comes in four slot-together parts and stands 240 cm tall. Also included are three feeder hooks, a water bowl and a mesh food tray.

Push the feeding station into the ground or fit into a patio base (R402058).

Please note: The feeders and food are not included with this item. See our special offer R404720 to buy the feeding station with feeders and food.

    Nice and sturdy but SQUIRRELS
Good things first: I've had this for a while now (a couple of years) and it is sturdy and rust proof and has weathered well.

I don't keep the trays, as the water tray was hard to remove for cleaning and soon got filthy and a disease hazard. Also, it made it very easy for the squirrels and pigeons to reach the seed feeders. However, I'm going to have to get rid of this and get another one as even with a sturdy, squirrel-proof bird feeder, the squirrels can race straight up the pole and, holding on to the screw fixtures, raid the bird feeders. The squirrels treat this as an all-you-can-eat buffet station and the birds don't get a look in, so it's costing me a fortune in feed.
    RSPB response
Thank you for your review, we are sorry to hear squirrels have been an issue for you. We sell squirrel baffles for our feeding stations which I would recommend to help to deter squirrels from climbing up the pole!

    Bird magnet
Day one, juvenile starlings found it. Day two, a robin. Day three, a few sparrows. Day five, the first bluetit I've seen in my garden in about six months, and a collared dove. Today, about 20 sparrows fighting for position. It's a bird magnet! Osnly issue is where to position the water so it doesnt get filled with seeds and droppings - my birds are very messy eaters.

Inserted into a deep, wide planter and not in the ground
I have just purchased this feeding station and although it it meant to be inserted into the ground or used with a patio stand, I have inserted it into a very deep, wide planter due to siting difficulties. The spiked first section inserts fully and deeply into the planter and meets the planter's top soil level. The soil in the planter is heavy loam and not the lighter plant compost. The planter is positioned against a trellis-covered wall. For additional stability, I securely wired the pole to the trellis from one vertical strut to the next, wrapping the wire several times around the pole and tensioning the wire. I then firmly taped all the pole joints, the tray-securing-rings and top section of the feeder. It's as solid as a rock with no movement whatsoever and has withstood an overnight gale.

Perhaps other buyers might find this information useful if presented with the same siting problems as myself.

    Practical & Successful Design
Great value. Piece of cake to assemble, easy to insert with a bit of common sense (pilot hole with a thinner tube works well & insert as deep as poss). Suggestion of another reviewer to insert a garden support pole inside feeder pole is a good one. Yes, head will rotate. Yes, pole will widen ground hole a bit over time Yes, once every few weeks, good idea to move (hygiene) & clean up at base. But these aren't downsides - they're just practical management. So simple and the birds love it. Only up a couple of weeks and we are inundated with loads of Siskins, Great & Blue Tits, Goldfinches, Bullfinches, Chaffinches, Collared Doves, Blackbirds, Magpies, House Sparrows and even a Great Spotted Woodpecker!!

RSPB response: Thank you for your review, it's great to hear that you have so many birds feeding in your garden!

    A good feeding station 402056 £24.99
Excellent item - well made, well priced and easy to put up. It's a tall pole and just a little wobbly so inside I added an old metal stem from an IKEA standard lamp, put a few pieces of draught excluder to take up the gap between the two poles and now it is sturdy enough. Takes maybe 30 minutes to assemble and install the lot, including the very good squirrel guard.

    Excellent
I have had this feeding station for four years without any complaint, other than the water dish becoming brittle and shattering. However, the RSPB sent me a replacement for free. I plan on ordering another when we move house as we cannot get the ground spike out of the ground! It is a well designed feeding station, easy to assemble and adjust for different feeders and food types.

Good product - provided properly installed
I have been using this feeding station for some years now. I would like to make a request for spare water bowls to be made available for purchase. Over time the plastic becomes brittle, last time it blew off it cracked. I see we can purchase new mesh seed feeding bowls but not the water bowls.

Tips for installing. In order to resist string winds and tilting is is necessary to hammer the base pole into the ground by at least 1 foot. Unless the ground is waterlogged it is best to create a hole using a metal or wooden spike of some kind to make a pilot hole, and then to hammer to feeder pole into this pilot hole. If you try to hammer the supplied pole into the ground unless very wet you will risk damaging the pole. I also move the feeder every 12/18 months as even when installed correctly the pole will still work loose in time..

Big plus point is that the pole system is completely cat proof and with the conical squirrel guard fitted it is also squirrel proof.

RSPB response: Thank you for your review, we are glad you are enjoying your bird feeding station. Your request for spare water bowls has been passed onto our product team.

    Not very sturdy
As other reviewers said it seems top heavy once feeders are on it. I solved the problem of it tilting by purchasing a tall green plastic cane from a garden centre, and inserting it inside the complete length of the pole. This has made it a lot sturdier. I also put tape round the pole segments. This has made it more stable.

RSPB response: Thank you for your review. Issues relating to this feeding station are thankfully still a very small percentage of sales, however we have worked with our suppliers to strengthen this product for all current and future production. This will minimise any faults of this kind. Please contact customer services who will be able to help.

    Quality feeder
This is an excellent quality product that has brought lots of birds to my garden. It is very tall so provides a safe place for birds to feed away from cats etc. Well built, extremely easy to assemble (you couldn't possibly need instructions, you just slot one piece into the other and push the pole into the ground!) and offers plenty of different hooks/trays for food and water. I'm buying another one for my back garden today!

    Good value, nice looking feeder
I read the reviews before ordering this and was expecting instructions. However it arrived today, December 1st, with no instructions. I cannot see why instructions are necessary though - it just fits together in minutes. The pole joints are a bit wobbly though and I am wondering how it will fare in my windy garden. Too high for me to reach the top, so I just took a couple of sections out to hook the feeders on and the height keeps my cat away, so is worth the inconvenience. All in all, very happy at the moment.

I took receipt of this feeding station yesterday 10 October 2014 based on a review which lamented that there were no instructions. The response from RSPB on 28 June 2014 was that there are now instructions include in the box. There were no instructions in the box! This also applies to the patio base & the squirrel baffle cone. Was not able to download the online instructions.

Very Good but no instructions. Can swivel out of place.
I am afraid I bought this feeding station through Amazon, I wish I had bought it direct. It was a present for my Mother. It lacked instructions, but I found it easy an intuitive to put together. However I positioned it carefully so my Mother could see all the feeders from her lounge chair and unfortunately when squirrels ( which she like to watch) and magpies jump on the feeder it spines out of position. I thought I might be missing screws or bolts, but did not know because there are no instructions I could not tell. Having read the other reviews I now know it is only slot together. I shall have to get some black tape to stabilise the joints. Also get a big mallet to bang the pole into the ground, it needs to go in quite deep to be stable. Also it is very tall, I struggled to put the feeders on and I am 5' 10"", not exactly tall , but not short either. Some people might have to remove a pole section to be able to refill the feeders (but this might make it too short. I have given it 4 stars not 5, because it swivels out of place and has no instructions.

RSPB response - We are very sorry that you have been disappointed with this product. We do now have instructions in the box, which can also be supplied on a .pdf by customer services if required. We have other feeding station options, such as the Regency feeding station, and the new Premium feeding station, both of which have improved, more stable joints. The hooks are open in this way to enable the easy hanging of feeders.

Easy to Assemble - No Base included
Saw this in the RSPB Shop at Lomond Shores and it was sitting with a base which is ideal for our garden. Most disappointed on opening the box to find no stand and to buy one will cost more than the feeder station! That said, I can't understand why everyone is saying it is difficult to assemble - it is easy! Poles fit together and you can use all 4 or just 3 which makes it easier to reach the top hooks. The extra hooks and tray holders fit easily onto the poles and simply screw into place and hang securely. Our resident Woodpeckers, Jay, Magpies and small birds have given it the seal of approval!

Quick to put up and already getting feathered visitors
Posting a review as almost put off buying product due to reviews saying it was difficult to assemble. It is not. The poles simply slot together and then the extras slip over and are tightened into position. It took less than 10 mins to unpack, assemble, stick in lawn and add food. It has been a big hit already. I love the removable water tray, much easier to provide clean water than my old bird bath.

    Birds Very Happy.
This is a good all round feeder.

very simple to assemble as the poles simply slot into each other and the decorative pommel sits on top. The mesh and water bowl holders have to be put on at a 45 degree angle and then straightened off to attach them, but this is fine. We have the water perpendicular to the other feeds, but it still needs refreshing each day as the mucky birds keep filling it with rubbish.

Pigeons can't work out how to use it but all the smaller birds love it. More time is needed to see if it can survive the British weather.

    Hard to assemble
Like others I need instructions. The nuts do no fix into the holes in the poles. Either the nuts are the wrong size or the poles have holes that are unnecessary which is confusing. No instructions came with the product.
I've just put it up by screwing the nuts against the pole - of course they don't fit properly and either the whole thing will fall down or the nuts will rust.
    Instructions please!

RSPB response - Thanks for your review. We're working on a new instruction sheet that we can include online and hope to have it available soon. The pole sections simply slot together and the adjustable hook, tray etc are slid into position and tightened to keep them in place.

Not as good as it used to be!!
I bought this feeding station recently to add to the one I purchased a few years ago. The specs have been changed, and NOT for the better, it is slightly lower in height, but the worst Change is the lack of a spade foot. This foot on my old one has kept that feeding station upright for years, through gales and the worst of weather. I erected my new feeding station 3 days ago and already I have had to re site it due to a heavy lean. On the plus side, the mesh feeder is now removable for easy cleaning. Please RSPB reinstate the spade foot, this is necessary for stability!!!

RSPB Response - Thanks for your review. I have checked with our product team and as far as we know, our feeding station has never had a spade foot. It's possible you are confusing this with a different product.

We are really pleased with this feeder. The birds seem pretty happy too - just can't quite believe how many birds we've had on it. They have got through 1/2 long feeder full of sunflower hearts just today!
Need to watch the water bowl in wind but otherwise no problems. We bought an extender pole too but it looks like it isn't compatible with this feeder which is a shame. However it is tall enough though without one.

    Pole is not strong enough
The pole has snapped just above the bottom section for the third time. On the previous occasions we have used the shortened pole, but now it would be so low it would be no challenge for the cat and rats at all. The main problem is the hollow stem is not strong and the weight of 3 feeders in a wind makes it sway and eventually snap.
Has it done good service? Yes, we've had it for several years.
Will I buy another? Not if I can find something better

Does the job and looks pretty in the garden
We've had ours a year. Here's how it fared.

Does it attract birds? Yes. This is going to depend what you put in the feeders, of course, but we get tits (coal, blue and great), robins, finches (gold and green) and a woodpecker.

Does it look good on its own? Yes. The black paint has survived the wind, sun and rain well. No sign of rust yet. The pieces are all still straight.

Does it stay upright in the ground? Usually. I drive ours into the ground with my body weight. It does tend to bend over a bit and getting it perfectly straight is quite difficult. Wind can blow it right over if you don't drive it in far enough.

Does it need much cleaning? A fair bit, yes. No matter how high you put the water dish, the birds tend to poop in it, so that really needs a washout daily. The pole gets pooped on, too. In a way, this is a sign of the feeder's success. It's a fact of life that after you eat, you poop, so if you're going to feed the birds, well, you'd better expect poop.

Some of the other reviewers sound like they're not reviewing the same product. Or maybe they're just not that adept at putting things together. One reviewer said he/she couldn't align the 'drill holes' to mount the hooks. Well, that's because aren't any drill holes. It's a wing nut/bolt pressure affair. Sure, there are no instructions, but unless you're in howling wind and rain I can't see why 30 seconds spent figuring out which pole slides into which is so difficult.

If I had to criticise it, I'd agree with the other reviewer who said a single-pole feeder would be better. This would be easier to keep upright and be quicker to move.

Great product sturdy, easy to assemble birds utterly love it
I suffered a stroke recently & have limited mobility & only one hand. Nonetheless, I assembled it one handed, & my son put it up in the garden when he came home. It does not need instructions, it is simplicity itself to construct & easily banged firmly into the ground. The food trays are all moveable, & in no time the feeder was visited by dozens of birds including bullfinch, song thrush, female blackcap & the usual robins, tits, blackbirds & green & goldfinches. Pigeons were shooed off by banging on the window, & its completely rat & (so far) squirrel-proof. I bought a selection of buggy nibbles & suet balls from the rspb website, & they are devoured by all these garden birds. The song thrush was back & forth all day, unheard of! I am absolutely delighted with this product, & am buying one for my aunt for Christmas.

    Better than expected
With all the negative reviews I was somewhat chary of getting this, but decided to go ahead anyway and have been pleased with the results. Simple to put together. Since we get a lot of wind I decided on the ground fixing and, as we have a lot of squirrels, I got a squirrel cone as well. There's been several days of high winds but the only problem with this has been that the waterbowl sloshes water down the cone, so I've replaced it with another feeder and keep a water bowl on the ground. Yes, the pigeons can sit on the top and get at some of the feeders, but it's a lot better than the feeding stations in trees that I had before, where the small birds had little chance against the horde of pigeons, and the squirrels can't get at any of it so it's saving me a lot of money. I've now ordered a second one.

    Rubbish
Poorly designed. The feeders are sighted above the water bowl so that the water is contaminated quite easily. Not one of the poles fitted correctly. I am amazed the RSPB allows this product to be sold on the RSPB online shop. I feel as a RSPB member that to sell this product is to treat us with contempt.

    Nil points
This is without doubt the most poorly designed self-assembly product I have ever purchased. I hesitated for several weeks before ordering this because of some of the negative reviews. I can only say they were right.

The item should most certainly come with assembly instructions because it is NOT straightforward to put together. However any instructions would not make up for the fact that the poles do not fit together properly or even securely. The drill holes to attach the feeder hook, water bowl and mesh feeder are not aligned to the pole holes and I've been unable to fit them.

Two pieces of advice. If you're thinking of buying this product, don't. To the RSPB, remove this item from sale, go back to the drawing board and design a good solid product instead of this ill-thought through piece of flimsiness. If I hadn't ordered the cast iron base no doubt it would have been even more of a struggle to try and assemble.

    Flawed design
I've had the same problem as others, pigeons perch on the top bars and poo into the seed and water trays, twice a day cleaning isn't enough to keep them clean (and it's not like I'm overrun with pigeons either). Pigeons can sit in the food tray, so they do - other birds can't eat. If it were possible to move the top piece to the middle of the pole it wouldn't be so bad, but it's not, so I'm having to buy additional poles and equipment from other suppliers just to be able to provide clean water and food for ground feeders. The pole does lean and shake and before I read the other negative reviews I was willing to blame this on the soil I'd driven it into, but apparently it's not just me. I'm really disappointed!

    Not very good at all
The pole does not stand straight as the sections do not fit very tightly, so there is always a bend in the pole even when you get the bottom section straight. This gets progressibly worse as more birds and animals use the pole eventually leading to the pole falling over.

The water tray is useless as it just fills with bird poo and seeds and bits of food and the water sloshes out all the time when anything lands on the pole.

Squirrels have no trouble leaping onto the pole and eating the peanuts and nor do they have any problem climbing the pole!

The attachments keep spinning around which is really annoying.

Overrall, really dissapointed of the build quality of this pole which is just really poor. A pole that is in one section is a must.

    Difficult to assemble
It was difficult to assemble and there were no instructions. When I phoned 'customer services' I was advised there were no instructions. We finally managed to put it together but it is not particularly sturdy. When full height I can't reach the top hooks so I have to lift the top section off to refill. If I take a section out the bottom feeding stations are too low to the ground.

    Excellent product
I've been delighted with this feeder pole, it is sturdy, unobtrusive and easy to dismantle for cleaning and refilling. I am very impressed with the height which keeps my birds safely away from the ground (although it helps that I'm tall enough to reach)! I placed a stone in the water bowl and positioned it at the top and have had no problems with it. The birds in my garden love it and we've had a nuthatch visiting regularly since the day I put it up, as well as flocks of long tailed tits which we didn't often see before. Our woodpecker took a while to get used to it but is now back as a regular visitor too. Our squirrel which would previously raid the seed feeder mercilessly has not been seen in the garden since this went up. This is a quality and thoughtfully made product that I'm glad I bought. If anything, I wish that it were possible to buy an additional hook or two so that I can try offering some special food such as nyjer seed alongside my seed, peanuts and lard cakes!

    Beware if buying with stand
I bought this feeding station because of its height, as I have found that other feeding stations are too low to the ground. However, please beware that if buying with the stand you will lose quite a bit of height because you cannot use the bottom section of the pole. I did enquire whether I could buy extra sections, but was informed that these are not available. Very disappointing as otherwise a decent product.

    Not very impressed
I bought this bird feeding station as a present for my parents for their garden. I decided to buy it after reading good reviews and noticing that they considered birds not getting caught on it, unlike alot of other bird stations around. When it arrived it was damaged at the top and there was no instructions. I would have sent it back but my dad didnt want to have to wait for another one as they seem to be out of stock and didnt want the hassle. So if it is put together right or not I dont know, there was no fixings for the poles so I had to keep them together using the bowl supports (which are wonky, so we have wonky bowls) and have nothing to hold the bottom pole on. It also scratches easily when sliding the bowl support on. So overall not very impressed, which is disapointing especially from the RSPB.

    Water bowl please!!!
The birds in my garden really like this feeder, but I'd also like to be able to buy a new water bowl - mine seems to have disappeared!!! Any idea when replacement bowls would be available?

    squirrels and water dishes
Given up on water dish as no matter where put it on pole promptly fills up with seed and droppings. Green cone squirrel baffle sold by RSPB will fit fine if you wrap some duck tape around pole where you want cone to rest. Did one approx 2 years ago on a similar pole and it's still in place and it works.

    Squirrel feast
Agree in general with previous comments. Great for attracting birds. Only problem is our squirrel has no problem climbing it, and I can't find any squirrel guards eg pole slinky or guard cone that fit this pole size. It would be lovely to have an option of a cage to keep the bigger birds and squirrel off the mesh tray, too! Have just placed a rock in the water tray to hopefully stop it blowing away.

    A great feeder system
I used some broken wooden clothes pegs to wedge into the base to get the unit straight. Worked a treat. Feeds my garden birds well. especially accompanied by a ground feeder tray.

Great but how do you stop the pigeons?
Love the design and the ability to provide all types of food and water. Only problem is: large pegeon plonks itself on the mesh food try and no other birds get a look in.

Has proved very popular with lots of different birds
I have been very pleased with the feeder it has made viewing the birds very easy. I was disappointed that the mesh basket screw has a poor thread which has meant that I have been unable to tighten it sufficiently to prevent it from sliding to the ground.

    Wouldn't buy another
Difficult to get into the ground. Tilts over. Had to abandon the water dish and open mesh dish for seeds as they constantly filled up with bird poo and seeds. Have ordered the socket in a hope that it will solve the falling over problem

    Squirrels
I've bought a squirrel 'baffle' to fit on this feeder and it's brilliant. It's a clear plastic half globe that fits on the pole. The squirrels can see the food, smell the food, but can't get to it!! My only problem with the feeeder is that the plastic water bowl has shattered in the cold this winter and I'm not sure I can get a replacement.
