Designer: Kerry Goodwin
Roseate terns are the UK’s rarest breeding seabird and are the focus of intensive conservation work through the EU LIFE programme. They were driven almost to extinction in the 19th century by the demand for their tail streamers, which were used to decorate ladies’ hats, but their future is now looking brighter. In 2019 at Coquet Island in Northumberland, their largest UK colony, a record 122 pairs fledged an amazing 160 chicks. Elsewhere, two pairs nested on The Skerries, off Anglesey, fledging four chicks, and one pair hatched out two chicks at RSPB Larne Lough in Northern Ireland. Kerry has cleverly used a coloured tubelining slip to accentuate the force of the coastal waves, above which her roseate terns swoop and soar.
