Part of our new organic cotton scarf collection, inspired by nature

A beautiful scarf made from soft organic cotton with strong environmental and ethical benefits over non-organic cotton. This light ochre scarf proves that fashion doesn't have to cost the earth.

The avocet is of course the elegant wader adopted by the RSPB logo. Several avocets display on this scarf, some complete with reflections in the water. Displayed in shades of white and blue (rather than black), its graceful form makes this scarf truly distinctive.

The cotton story

Cotton is the world's largest non-food crop, and millions of people rely on the industry for survival. However, the environmental impacts of conventional cotton farming can be devestating.

Cotton production uses huge volumes of water, which has led to the loss of habitats around the world - for people and animals. In Kazakhstan for example the Aral Sea that supported a strong local fishing industry and a wealth of wildlife shrunk due to cotton production, leaving a Sea that is only a fraction of what it once was and taking away a place that many called home.

In addition, most fabrics made from cotton rely on farming methods that use harmful pesticides. The run-off from contaminated fields can poison rivers, wildlife and whole communities. Furthermore the cost of these pesticides often leave farmers trapped in debt.

GOTS certified organic cotton

Organic cotton is produced without the use of synthetic fertilisers and pesticides. The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) ensures textiles are produced in a more ecological and socially responsible way.

  • Water use is monitored, with targets set to reduce water consumption and increase efficiency more sustainably
  • Pesticides are not used, encouraging more wildlife-friendly farming
  • Social criteria are also required: Minimum wages, safe working conditions, and fair working hours.
  • Using a natural fibre like cotton means microplastics leeching from fabrics into our waterways is not an issue

Look out for the GOTS logo and better alternatives to non-organic cotton when updating your wardrobe.

Caring for your organic cotton scarf

The dry clean label has been added to our organic cotton scarves as this method will prolong the life of your scarf.

However you should also be able to cold hand wash and cold and gentle machine wash (30 degrees) your scarf though it may result in a shorter lifespan than if it was only dry cleaned. Further washing advice is available in this wiki how article: https://www.wikihow.life/Wash-a-Dry-Clean-Only-Garment
