    A great bird seed blend!

Here's another great blend we've designed for putting into seed feeders all year round - to nourish lots of different wild garden birds. The 'extra' is the protein and energy boost to this bird seed, added by way of generous quantities of sunflower hearts in with the sunflower seeds (black and striped), husk-free oats, red millet and canary seed.

We recommend using our Classic seed feeder or Easy-clean® seed feeders with this bird food.

Most garden birds will eat many different foods. Here's a quick guide to the birds that particularly enjoy this food, though other species may also enjoy it too:

The last two days when the feeder was a bit low and waiting for me to refill I had sparrows shoving each other aside to get to the feeding holes..
The small birds have been eating it like there's no tomorrow. Even seeming to prefer it to the sunflower hearts though they go for those too.

    A Crafty Move
I fell for a half price offer on a small bag of this when ordering something else. Have never seen it scoffed so quickly with absolutely no waste at all. The reviewer who said the black sunflower seeds were left must have very strange birds in his garden! Of course the RSPB knew when it was on offer, how popular it would be with the birds, so now I have to keep ordering it. My only complaint? I can't afford to buy the constant amount the birds would eat. I would get through sackfulls in no time!

    Great stuff!
I bought a 5.5kg bag of this a month or so ago, along with some other stuff from RSPB and the birds absolutely love it! I've mostly seen Bluetits, Great tits and Robins although the Pigeons and Collared Doves make it disappear extra fast - almost too fast! Hence I've placed a new order for the 12KG bag. Top notch grub that the birds love!

    Rather disappointed
I've given 3 stars as the birds seem to like this mix - when they can get it out of the feeders. My large bag has a lot of woody bits in which keep causing blockiages. The feeders were also purchased from RSPB so I would expect both products to work well together. This may be just a faulty bag, but I will think hard before buying any more.

RSPB response: Thank you for your review. It is a very popular mix and we are glad that your birds enjoy it. Sorry that you had a bag with unexpected woody bits in it, this should not be the case. We did have an issue in an early batch which has now been dealt with so should not happen again. Please contact customer services who will organise a replacement for you.

Good mix but too many sunflower seeds in their husks?
The birds love this mix but I seem to have more empty husks lying about than in the past - not only just around the feeder, but on the grass and along a much wider radius to my decking. I now have to sweep the grass (!) and I'll probably have to reseed grass seeds there. There has been a change in the balance of the mix - it is darker than in the past as there are more sunflower seeds in their husks. The birds are not complaining as they scoff everything really quickly - I am because of the extra cleaning!

RSPB response: Thank you for your review. We have not changed the recipe of this mix, so it may be that a particular batch had slightly different ratios or wasn't mixed as well. We will feed back to our supplier.

The wrong product for my situation
I was disappointed in my first RSPB food purchase. It looked as though there was too much black sunflower seed. However I put it in my feeders and on the bird table.
Feeders: the birds took the smaller seed but left the black sunflower. This soon blocked the feeder holes and the birds stopped coming. We have some visiting great tits that took a small amount but not enough to keep it moving.
Table: Very quickly the dish on the table was just a mass of black sunflower seed which was then left. I have started to crush this and the birds pick amongst it. I should say that I have an upturned wire hanging basket on the table which reduces access for blackbirds and larger birds.
RSPB spoke to their suppliers and said they could find no issues with the batch but RSPB have kindly refunded the cost and I will now purchase some NO Mess Seed which I expect to suit my situation.

    Outstanding product
I have fed this seed mix for a while & have an increasing variety of birds. Coal tits, blue tits, greenfinches, goldfinches, chaffinches, sparrows, great tits, nuthatches, robins & a greater spotted woodpecker feed daily. I put in a small handful of buggy nibbles with the seed mix & that vanishes too. I feed this on the ground also & have blackbird, song thrush, starling, wren, dunnock, collared dove, stock dove & of course, woodpigeon. These are small in number & characterful (one fought off a rook the other day). Grandma who is disabled, lives with us now & she has something to watch all the time. Thank you RSPB - we have a thriving population of birds & it is a great joy.

    Top wildlife restaurant!
This feed mix is clearly delicious - we have a constant flow of visitors: blue tits, great tits, robins, sparrows, blackbirds, wrens, bullfinches, chaffinches, long tailed tits, collared doves, wood pigeons, jays, magpies, greater spotted woodpeckers and rooks, to our bird table. The squirrels and hedgehogs enjoy the sunflower seeds and hearts that are inadvertently dropped onto the ground.
Would there be any chance of developing an organic version of this mix which would promote wildlife in the areas from which it is harvested (plus providing a healthier alternative for our garden wildlife)?

RSPB response: Thank you for your review. Please see our information about Fair to Nature farming, which is the scheme that we use to source our bird food from. This scheme actively encourages wildlife on the farms we buy from; the farmer actively manages 10% of their farmable land for nature/wildlife. We believe that this offers more conservation benefits than organic sourcing.

    Great mix for Nuthatches!
This mix, used in a Squirrel Buster feeder(R401636), not only means the birds actually get to eat but also has attracted a Nuthatch to join in which has previously not been seen in the garden. I think it enjoys eating the Red Millet which collects at the bottom of the tray as it can perch on the mesh sides upside down to get to it-great to watch.

    Sunflower seeds in bird mix
Unfortunately, in my long experience birds will not eat the sunflower seeds with the husks on. So the feeders remain full of these uneaten seeds. Sunflower hearts are devoured with relish. It would be worth reformulating the mix to include only sunflower hearts.

RSPB response - Thanks for your review. Many finches enjoy black sunflower seeds. We suggest you try our no-mess sunflower mix or sunflower hearts instead.

    Exceeded expectations
I had been using a similar product from an alternative supplier and wondered why my feeder clogged. It was only after using the RSPB mix I realised it was not the feeder but the seed mix that was at fault, as this version does not clog my feeder.

Has attracted new set of birds to the feeder
A bit messy because of the sunflower husks, but worth it. We have bullfinches, long tailed tits and even goldfinches, in addition to the usual finches and tits, coming regularly for this seed. Even the robins go for it.

    very popular
This is extremely popular, if a bit messy (sunflower husks) and it has brought goldfinches and long tailed tits to the feeder for the first time. The bullfinches can't leave it alone, and all the tits and greenfinches like it, even the robins, who don't normally bother with the feeder, are eating it.

Popular but not the right mix for my garden
Most of the birds in my garden like this mix but nothing will eat the red millet. Our feeder is busy all day with blue tits, great tits, starlings, greenfinches, nuthatches and the occasional house sparrow and robin until there's only red millet left. Even if I throw it on the ground it just stays there. I hoped it would eventually attract some tree sparrows but it hasn't. I'll try the no mess mix next, perhaps mixed with some black sunflower seeds to make sure everyone's happy.

    Birds love this - but.....
All my birds love this seed and empty the feeders in no time, but why oh why are two large sacks packed into one box? Surely two boxes half the size wouldn't be that much more expensive. The 26 Kg box is so heavy to lift I really struggle.

    Most birds love it
I need to refill my 4 feeders every day, but sadly, a very large percentage of the black sunflower seeds end up being swept up and put into the compost bins as nothing eats them, pigeons and doves included. May well be a localised issue, but it is such a dreadful waste of food and money!! Having said that, it does attract a wide range of birds who seem to love it.

    Blink and it's gone!
The new formulation is so superior to all the seeds from both the RSPB and other companies' which I have bought over the years. There is absolutely no waste - the birds eat it all, different species going after different bits. I only gave it a 3 star for value for money because it is much more expensive than almost all other similar seeds. However, I just feed less.

    The best yet!
I bought this for the first time as the table mix didn't seem to be too popular and the birds seemed to pick out what they wanted from it, leaving a great deal of waste. Not with this Feeder Mix Extra. My goodness it is gone before the day is out. Fully topped up feeders are emptied. I have found since using this mix that I get many more sparrows and had a visit from a bullfinch for the first time. A total success!

    popular seed
All the seed-eating birds that visit our garden love this mix and queue up at the seed feeder, very impatiently at times. Surprisingly even the nuthatches seem to prefer this to peanuts at the moment. The only downside is that the birds must discard some of the seed at the same time as the shells. The shells cause unsightly waste on the stones below the table and we get plants growing from seed missed by the ground feeders.

    excellent all-rounder
tend to get other foody bits for birds also, and this is great as a base to which you can add some of the other nibbley bits, depending on the feeder type being used. I like the fact that this can be used pretty much everywhere, and the birds seem to love it too... may well need to buy in larger bulk next time!

    Big hit!
This has been a huge hit in my garden! I'd used other mixes for a while and enjoyed seeing a steady stream of visitors to my feeders. However, since using this mix the number of birds must have doubled in the space of a few weeks, meaning I now have to top up my large feeder almsot daily. I was genuinely amazed. There's an abundance of tits and finches, with wood pigeons and collared doves tidying up on the ground. I see less sparrows though oddly - I don't know if anyone else has experienced this? Overall I'd definitely recommend this though. The only downside is that it's costing me a fortune in seed!

    Loadsa Bird Visitors
Since I began feeding birds in the garden about 18 months ago the number of feathered visitors has been steadily increasing, and now provides a colourful display all day long. I feed this mix in long seed feeders hanging in garden trees. It seems greenfinches like it best of all - but we also have goldfinches, chaffinches, great tits and house-sparrows joining in daily, with occasional blue-tits too. And to make sure nothing's wasted - wood-pigeons peck over the spillage on the ground underneath. The only problem with all this is I'm buying lots of bird seed - so the special offer this week is much appreciated. Thank you RSPB!

Only started watching birds in garden since Radio 4 survey. Tried tis food and he sunflower hearts and this seemed consistently more popular with my garden birds even though I swopped feeders around for a test. Especially favoured by Greenfinches and Goldfinches but also see Blue Tit, Great Tit, Black Cap and Chaffinch scooping up what they drop.

    Feeder mix extra
I tried this mix 'cos it was on offer when I bought my Christmas stuff and birdie goods. I like it so much I shall always buy it now. There's no comparison with the stuff I used to buy from my local hardware store which used to produce a lot of 'dust' at the bottom of the bag and which would also clogg up my feeder. It's such excellent quality. Only trouble is (rueful grin), the birds like it so much they are stuffing their little faces as if it's going out of fashion !!! and expecting me to keep well and truly stocked up !! The sparrows are really competitive for the two perches available and the great tits and blue tits niftly nip in for a sunflower heart between sparrow change over. Thanks RSPB
