Includes over 1,200 superb colour illustrations, as well as a new visual index to bird families on the inside covers.

Excellent guide for beginners
I purchased this book during an unplanned visit to RSPB Titchwell Marsh in Norfolk. I'd previously been thinking that I really ought to learn how to recognise the multitude of small birds (and slightly bigger ones) that are common visitors to my garden. This book has proved to be an excellent guide and I can now recognise everything that appears. It has the perfect balance of illustrations to help identification, and brief but interesting background text, but without overwhelming the newcomer to the subject. The pocket size means it is easy to keep close at hand, including within the house and easy to look things up. I've had my copy for a few years now, it has been well thumbed and the binding is sound. Happy to recommend.
