Product description

These buggy coconut shells are a delectable treat for garden birds. They're packed with premium suet, seeds and cereals, plus tasty mealworms.

Popular with tits, these buggy coconut shell suet treats are a feeder and a food in one, and can be fed all year round.

Nutritious and tasty, they hang easily from the branch of a tree or a bird feeding station.

As they contain suet, which is high in fat, they're particularly important during the winter months, when food is scarce.

Our buggy coconut shell suet treats come individually wrapped and packaged in a recyclable cardboard box.

  • Easy-to-hang coconut shell treats with added mealworms.
  • Contain premium suet, seeds and cereals, plus mealworms.
  • Can be fed all year round.
  • Individually wrapped and packaged in recyclable cardboard box.

advice

Our suet products are specially formulated to make them suitable for year-round feeding. However, if positioned in direct sunlight they may soften or melt in very hot weather. If this is happening, try placing them in a shaded spot instead, or waiting until the weather is cooler.

Coconut shells are biodegradable. The composting process can take a long time, but don’t give up hope! We would recommend breaking them up into as small pieces as possible, taking care to protect your eyes, which speeds up the process. Please check with your local council whether these can be placed into food waste collection bins.

Alternatively, why not clean your coconut shells with a mild detergent and reuse them! You can refill them by making your very own suet or decorate your home with plant pots for seedlings and succulents.

Bluetit's favourite!
I hung this coconut up on a Sunday night, and by Monday morning it was empty! I think the gang of starlings were the first to get to it, but ever since the starlings moved on I have seen the Bluetits arrive at the coconut multiple times a day to pick at the scraps. I will need to make an adaption so the starlings cannot get to it, as they are already fed suet from my bird table!
One star less for value for money as the Super Suet Mealworm fat balls have the same ingredients and are cheaper by weight.

String too short
I have bought suet coconut shells from other places often and never had this problem before. Every single one of them had a very short string that you couldn't keep a knot in. I tried fastening them up with wire, it is a bit of a faff to do and lasted for a while, but i am not going to get any more of these from RSPB even though i want to support the charity.

Lacking bugs
I've bought this product for years. It's particularly popular with our bluetits at this time of year. Sadly, this year the coconuts are smaller and have very few mealworms. Not so popular!

RSPB response

It is great that birds are enjoying the treats. As they are a natural product the size of the shells can vary depending on the harvest. The mealworms are powdered to make them easier to consume, which affects visibility. The composition has not changed.
