Product description

This small guardian is easy to assemble and fits our small Ultimate easy-clean nut & nibble, seed and nyjer feeders.

Strong and durable, it is powder-coated with steel and has no foot traps for your garden birds.
The cage makes your feeders resistant to larger birds and adult squirrels as well as protecting smaller birds from predators.

Refilling and cleaning the feeder is a doddle: Simply slip the guardian over your feeder and screw it into place.

  • Gaps measure 4 x 3.5cm
  • Distance from guardian to perch on seed and nyjer feeders 3.5cm
  • Distance from guardian to mesh on nut and nibble feeders 8cm.
  • Feeder not included.
  • Comes with seed tray. This acts as the base and will catch any loose seeds to minimise waste.

Hee hee
Only just received and fitted these guards today in an attempt to stop larger birds hoovering up the seed and gobbling up the fat balls in super quick time. This afternoon I have seen several pigeons, jackdaws and crows wandering about the grass looking a bit lost and dejected! Plus saw a pigeon sitting on top of the pole on which the feeders hang, looking confused. Oh, and another trying to get seed from a medium feeder (with tray at bottom) to which I have added a "Rainaway" just under the upper set of perches and gave up! Hooray! I know these birds have to eat too, but they take so much so quickly and I can't afford to support them. However, the tits, finches and sparrows seem to have no bother getting inside the cages (except when they land on the top and try to get through the narrower spaces at the top- they'll learn.) I even think that the smaller birds are feeding for longer at the protected feeders- wonder if they feel safer?

Very pleased with these guardians
We have had two of these guardians for some time now. Both have successfully deterred the squirrels and magpies - we have watched them try every now and again and then give up. They're good quality and still look in good condition. We have had another one on order for some time now so do hope that you will still be able to continue to supply these because as far as we are concerned they are a success!

Small Guardian Cage
Waited 2 months on back order after our last cage finally got too rusty. Almost cancelled the order and now wish I had.
Cage been in garden for 5 weeks now and we have seen only 4 birds inside it. However, we have seen many birds, including blue tits, robins and goldfinches, on the cage trying to get in and then giving up. Heartbreaking sometimes! Just watched a blue tit try several times and give up. The horizontal bars seem closer together than our last cage and seem too close for the birds to feel comfortable getting in. If RSPB had not been a charity I would have asked for refund for initial delay and, probably, now for a poorly designed product. On the plus side, quality is good, but, then, it is not cheap.
The response will be that the birds will get used to it. However, they are quite comfortable with it and are all round it, but cannot get in! Will give it another couple of weeks and then intend to cut off 3 or 4 horizontal sections and file the cuts smooth. This may lead to squirrel paw access but at least will allow the birds to feed!

RSPB response

Thank you for your review. Sorry you are disappointed with your purchase. We know from testing and reviews that small birds will happily use this guardian. It is great that some birds are already using this. As you say, we recommend giving this more time.
