Good box but snubbed by sparrowsWe had this a few years ago and put it up on the wall just below the now mended hole in the roof where they had been getting in and nesting. I'm afraid that the boxes remained empty year after year, we moved it but it was never used, it's now too rotted to keep.
Perhaps they'd prefer a different design or material? The woodcrete boxes are the most used in our garden. By Karen, on 14 Jan 2015
Great productThis has to be good value for money - It has a sanded finish which looks very professional. I would recommend this nestbox to anyone looking for value for money in an excellent product.
Now to discover if the birds are equally as impressed !! By Rodney, on 15 Dec 2013
Pleasantly surprised and now awaiting my first visitorsThis is my first wooden bird box that I have purchased. I am impressed by the quality of the materials, assembly and ease of access (via the hinged base). I have installed this on my gable end wall, facing NE and 4m off the ground. I would advise caution when installing as climbing ladders and using a drill is quite hazardous. The mounting plates were of high quality and the instructions easy to follow. The sloped roof appears to have been treated with a lacquer or similar which should prove useful during wet weather. I will consider purchasing another box if this is successful. RSPB Sparrow terrace nestbox
- Product information
Provide three separate sparrow nest boxes in one terrace, each with its own 32 mm entrance hole. Made in the UK with FSC timber and supplied with fittings. It has a hinged base for easy annual cleaning without needing to take it down.
Fixing screws not included.
Which size nestbox hole for which bird?
25 mm - blue tit, coal tit, marsh tit
32 mm - great tit, tree sparrow, pied flycatcher, house sparrow, nuthatch, lesser spotted woodpecker. 32 mm entry holes can, if you wish, be reduced to 25 mm using a nestbox plate (R0110).
RSPB nest boxes are made with thick FSC timber and will survive for many years, even without the use of preservatives.
If you do want to protect your nestbox further, use a water-based preservative (preferably one that complies with standard EN71 part 3 as safe for children's toys). Such paint/preservative types are clearly marked on the container, and are available from DIY stores and hardware shops.
Preservatives should only be applied to the outside of the box. Apply in the winter, when there is a low likelihood of occupancy. This will allow time for any remaining volatile components to evaporate.
For more information about siting a nest box please see the Advice section of the main RSPB website.
