A Solid Tripod with an excellent Pan Head for a Scope

This design has been thought through carefully for those who wish to use the tripod for high magnification spotting scopes. Since this review is detailed for those who desire it, I start without hesitation, by thoroughly recommending this tripod with the combined pan head as an excellent product and good value for money. My review has come after a year of using the tripod.

When the legs are extended and spread out, a sound solid base is created for the mounting of a scope. The one touch pan and tilt head is excellent. Just one side wheel that is twisted and locked controls all directions of movement. I like this single action very much, since you do not have to use two or three lock points - that are found on many tripod heads designed for cameras - to stop all motion of the tripod head; particularly important at the end of the day when you are tired. Movement of the head via the handle is consistently smooth. When my scope is set at 60x magnification, there is no creep movement sideways from the centre of view on the bird/object, when the head position is locked by the side wheel.

Although I wouldn't call it a travel tripod, I purchased it for this reason. Having a small car, I find it is easier than my other tripod to pack it in the boot with my other gear when I am travelling long distances. Even though it is not as compact as a four section leg travel tripod design, its three section leg design offers superior stability and solidness, which is exactly what is needed when viewing at high magnifications. The legs can be spread out and locked at three different angles if desired, although it is unlikely that you will want to use it beyond the standard position. With the tripod legs fully extended at the standard angle, I measured the distance between the legs at the base to be 104 cm, a spread that is greater than my other more bulky tripod, giving an indication of the solid stability the RSPB AN tripod gives (measurement made from the outside of one leg to the outside of the next at the base).

For maximum stability I use the centre column when it is set at its lowest position, which when the legs of the tripod are fully extended, I measured the height to the top of the pan head mounting release plate to be 138 cm. When the centre column is fully raised, I measured the height to the top of the pan head mounting release plate to be168.5 cm.

Having learned the hard way by selling onwards tripods I was not happy with for spotting scope use, I thoroughly recommend this product; and if you are a beginner, you cannot go wrong by investing in this product. Plus it will give you the extra pleasure of raising funds for the RSPB.

An excellent product and good value for money. Buy with Confidence.

Good tripod

This is a very sturdy tripod. The action on the head is smooth and sure. The quick release is most efficient being secured by a screw rather than a snap catch. On the top of one leg is a spirit level to ensure it is standing straight. On another is a compass. I am not sure what the purpose of this is as it never points North, which ever way I turn the tripod. I Find this rather odd. Overall .I am very satisfied with this product. By Peter, on 2 May 2016

Product information
The RSPB AN tripod is strong, sturdy and ideal for use with RSPB telescopes. Made from lightweight aluminium, it extends to a maximum height of 167 cm and closes down to a compact 66 cm.

The three section aluminium legs have non-slip rubber feet and the three leg angle positions make it easy to vary heights and improve stability. Quick action leg locks make for speedy and easy set up.

The Tripod head allows for smooth and accurate adjustment with minimal effort, using a single control. The Multi-position Arca Swiss fitting and single knob operation makes the secure setting of the plate quick and easy, while the safety stop feature eliminates accidental release.
