EXCELLENT PeanutsAside from dried Mealworms, nothing is more popular with my local birds than these peanuts.
I ordered a 5.5KG bag a month ago and here I am again, getting the 12kg bag this time. Interestingly the birds don't like to use the nut feeder that I have, so I took to using a food processor to grind up the nuts and pour them onto a mesh tray feeder and onto the ground for the Blackbirds etc.
... And BOY do they move fast! No matter whether I put out a handful or fill the tray right to the top, it'll be empty within a couple of hours. These are extremely popular nuts - almost too popular, since continuing to feed the birds at this rate is a challenge given the rather high prices here on RSPB.
Top notch grub! By Alex, on 3 May 2016
Great valueI have read others' reviews with interest. If peanuts have been sitting too long in the feeder I remove them and soak them. (I put new ones in, but never completely fill the feeder anymore).
At the moment, I am soaking a mug-full of peanuts in water overnight and then rolling a rolling pin over the peanuts which I have sandwiched between a couple of flimsy plastic chopping boards (Ikea has some). The skins separate from the nut, which I think is probably a good thing in terms of avoiding choking, and the peanuts split in half easily. I can make smaller bits easily too if I give them a bit of a bash with the rolling pin! I have it down to a fine art now so I don't find it time-consuming or particularly messy. I throw them around when I'm leaving for work!
These peanuts are so fresh I am tempted to eat them. They last longer than others and I am glad to know that they are carefully sourced to avoid health problems in birds. By Jelo, on 27 May 2015
Premium peanuts bird food
- Product information
RSPB Premium peanuts are a high energy wild bird food beloved of garden birds. We select only the best, top quality peanuts and, safety being our priority, reject any with detectable aflatoxin. Aflatoxin, sometimes found in poorer quality peanuts can build up in birds bodies, eventually leading to death.
Most garden birds will eat many different foods. Here is a quick guide to the birds that particularly enjoy this food, though other species may also enjoy it too:
- Blue tit - Great tit - Long-tailed tit - Siskin - Nuthatch - Great Spotted Woodpecker
Feed this bird food from a secure wire mesh nut and nibble feeder to avoid the risk of young birds choking on big pieces, with a guardian if you don't want squirrels to join the feast!
