advice

Which size nestbox hole for which bird?
25mm - blue tit, coal tit, marsh tit
32mm - great tit, tree sparrow, pied flycatcher, house sparrow, nuthatch, lesser spotted woodpecker. 32mm entry holes can, if you wish, be reduced to 25mm using a nest box plate (R0110).

RSPB nest boxes are made with thick timber and will survive for many years, even without the use of preservatives.
If you do want to protect your nest box further, use a water-based preservative (preferably one that complies with standard EN71 part 3 as safe for children's toys). Such paint/preservative types are clearly marked on the container, and are available from DIY stores and hardware shops.
Preservatives should only be applied to the outside of the box. Apply in the winter, when there is a low likelihood of occupancy. This will allow time for any remaining volatile components to evaporate.
For more information about siting a nest box please see the Advice section of the main RSPB website.

Why Screws?
For the last ten years we have had a bird box, made to RSPB specifications in a plum tree in our garden. Every year since I installed it, it has been used by blue tits. The box has a hinged lid and is reasonably easy to clean out each year after the breeding season. I noticed this year that the box was beginning to get rotten at the bottom, we decided to replace it. We bought the above box and a 25 mm plate, ready to install at the end of this season, it arrived yesterday. The box is well constructed, is very sturdy, but to my mind has a major design flaw. Instead of the usual hinged lid it has a hinged panel on the left side of the box, lifting from top to bottom. The side is secured in place by two screws. In my experience screws have a nasty habit of becoming difficult if not impossible to remove after time. I can imagine myself struggling at the top of a ladder, trying to unscrew these with my left hand. Perhaps for the first couple of years they would come out easily but as time went on they would become stuck fast. The worst situation would be to leave the box in place with the remains of previous years nesting material and whatever bugs had accumulated. Surely there must be another way of securing the side without the use of screws. I have decided to modify the box with a hook and eye on the underside but I really think your designers should go back to the drawing board and come up with a better solution.

RSPB response

Thank you for your review. We feel that the screws offer the most secure method whilst still allowing easy access. We have not had any complaints of screws getting stuck later in life, but we will continue to monitor this and contact our supplier.

3 lovely nest boxes arrived on Monday for our very small garden. By Tuesday a Coal tit or Great tit is showing interest. Wednesday he brought a friend to see. Thursday they are back again. So pleased. Hoping that they will decide its a home for them.
