Not as good as porthole feeder

We have a Porthole feeder, so thought we'd try this on another window.

However the quality of the product is reflected in the price - it is quite fragile - don't drop it!
The tethering option is obviously a good idea - we didn't spot that advice when we bought it.

It is not as well made as the porthole feeder, and has the disadvantage as noted by others of being very open to what some find less desirable birds and to squirrels.

So very much regret we wouldn't recommend it - buy the more expensive version! By Chris, on 30 Jan 2018

great in many ways but...

wonderful for small birds and great to get close-ups, but why make it so that a pigeon can get in? Now the pigeons have worked it out, they hoover up the food then make it fall off the window. Please redesign with a smaller gap!

RSPB response: Thank you for your review, we understand you frustrations with pigeons being able to access the feeder although it should be reasonably difficult for them. However we also need to make sure that birds have a clear escape route should they feel threatened by predators. Therefore all our window feeders are open to allow easy access. By X, on 29 Jun 2017

Very happy

I bought this a couple of months ago and the birds love it! I had been using the smaller tray but the bigger birds, especially the magpies were muscling in a lot. This one is much better, the birds loved it straight away as I think they feel more secure - it is much more secure. Blackbirds that were timid about the old one use this a lot. All the usual small birds use it a lot. The magpie has now sussed it out so might have to try to think up a cunning way to stop them. Unlike djc below my magpies are perching on the front like everyone else. By JulesA, on 19 Jun 2017

Product information

Here's a wonderful way to feed and watch wild birds up close. The tough, non-yellowing polycarbonate bird feeder attaches to your window with three strong suction cups and the tray detaches easily from the roof/back section (without removing the suckers) for cleaning and refilling.

Suitable for year-round feeding - and a fabulous gift for anyone.

  • - Great for feeding mealworms, sprinkles, nibbles and bird seed
How to install your window feeder
- Ensure the window is clean and dry.
- Soak the suckers in warm water to make them pliable, then fit them onto the back plate of the feeder.
- Attach the back plate to the window, without the food tray.
- Leave for at least 3 hours before attaching the food tray, to give time for the suckers to settle and achieve maximum adhesion.
- If desired, attach a length of string to the feeder to tether it. This will ensure that the feeder won't fall to the ground if it does come unstuck or is dislodged.
