Marvellous Feeder

We had a lot of trouble with Pine Martens wrecking the bird feeders. By the time we'd lost the fourth standard supermarket model, we decided that we had to spend a bit more and get a decent one. After advice from the RSPB we bought this one. It's been absolutely great. The Pine Martens haven't been able to break through - and that's been over a year. The birds have no problem with it, it gets cleaned out of food as fast as we can fill it up! I'd certainly recommend this feeder. By Duncan , on 4 Sep 2016

Keeps everything out!

I've had one of these for about 3 months; I noted other people's comments and secured the lid with extra wire. We watched it foil the squirrels but also noted that no birds went near it. I put a couple of fat balls in the outer cage to try to tempt them to it but since then, the squirrel has managed to eat them, I have seen 2 birds stop to give it a go, but NOTHING has got through the outer cage to eat the fat balls in the inner container. All too effective, I fear.

RSPB Response: Thank you for your review. This feeder has been widely tested and used by a number of smaller garden birds, who can certainly fit through the bars. It can take birds a while to pluck up the courage to use new feeders such as these, particularly if food is available elsewhere that is deemed easier to reach. Over time they will get used to the new feeder, however, and when times are harder they usually start to use them more confidently, this is the case with any new feeders to differing extents. Not resistant to our squirrels

The idea is excellent but the design flawed and could so easily be fixed. The two faults are firstly, the outer mesh squares are too large and as a previous reviewer noted, a determined squirrel i.e. all squirrels, can put its head through far enough to reach the inner mesh which is lighter and chew away at it and the fat balls. Secondly the clip is not up to the job, it needs a substantial fastener. Three times I came home to find the lid open, the contents spilled on the ground and a fat squirrel running away. The plastic insert in the clip is the first "food" that goes into the squirrel's stomach, the paint on the lid soon after. A rod through the back of the clip with lock nuts would improve the second fault and smaller outer mesh gaps. Both points have been raised months ago so it begs the question as to why we write these reviews if the product feedback isn't put to good use in a re-design?

RSPB response: Thank you for your review, we take feedback on our product very seriously and rest assured that we do value and act upon your reviews wherever we can. The supplier has now strengthened the clip on this product to improve it. By Inchcape, on 23 Mar 2016

Advice
Feeder guardians cannot stop all squirrels from gaining access to your bird feeders. Some small and juvenile squirrels will be able to fit through the gaps. Gaps small enough to stop all squirrels would also stop even small birds from using the feeder. A guardian can help deter squirrels and make it difficult for them to chew your feeders, making them last longer.

Keeping your bird feeders clean will help keep your birds healthy, happy and coming back for more.
