Product description

Easy-to-assemble feeder guardian to fit our medium Ultimate easy-clean nut and nibble, seed and nyjer feeders. This feeder guardian is strong, durable, and expertly-constructed from powder-coated steel, with no potential foot traps. The cage makes feeders resistant to larger birds and adult squirrels as well as protecting smaller birds from predators.

The space between the cage and the bird feeder is wider than in previous designs, making it harder for larger birds and adult squirrels to reach the feeder.

Refilling and cleaning the feeder is a breeze. The guardian slips over the feeder, then screws into place.

  • Measures 42cm (H) x 23cm (W) x 11.5cm (radius)
  • Gaps measure 4 x 3.5cm
  • Distance from guardian to perch on seed and nyjer feeders: 3.5cm
  • Distance from guardian to mesh on nut and nibble feeders: 8cm
  • Seed tray included

Bird feeder guardian
I bought a pair of guardians a couple of years ago to give the song birds a chance to feed at the nut and fat ball feeders. Generally they do a good job warding off most of the large birds/squirrels. However, the main competitor here are the green parakeets; very clever, athletic and resourceful creatures! The 8cm gap is not quiet enough to stop the parakeets stretching head and neck through the frame to reach the feeders, and of course once one successfully feeds they flock. I would certainly buy replacement bigger radius guardians - a parakeet busting feeder - even though I know the parakeets will continue to feed on the scraps in the bottom of the tray, but I and the song birds could live with that. I think to achieve the desired aim means the radius would need to extend from 11.5cm to 14cm. Grateful if you could consider this request. The parakeet buster would certainly go down well in SW London.

Keeps the pigeons off
I've struggled to keep pigeons off my feeders, and went through about 7 feeders before finally finding these ones. The pigeons would gather underneath my feeders, trampling my plants and pecking the leaves off my young shrubs. My spring bulb display was completely destroyed this year. They also gathered on neighbours' rooftops, damaging the tiles - needless to say they were becoming a nuisance! While the pigeons can hang off the cage and get the dropped food in the tray (with a lot of flapping and awkward hanging), they can't reach the seeds in the feeder itself, which means they only eat the leftovers and the majority of the seed is left for the smaller birds. I haven't had any problems with pigeons trampling my garden since and haven't seen more than two at a time. The amount of space between the feeder and the cage is the main reason it's successful. It's a relief to finally be rid of them!

The feeder is also very easy to take apart and clean, which is a huge plus.

Certainly protects the seeds from the birds!
I don’t know if birds on the south coast are fatter than elsewhere but hardly anything seems to get inside my 2 feeder guards and I rarely have to top up my feeder, if at all. I am seriously thinking of sawing some of the bars off as the feeders have been rendered incapable of the job they are supposed to be doing.

RSPB response

Thank you for your feedback. We know our guardians are effective from testing and customer feedback. The aperture has been designed to suit smaller birds without being a trap risk.Birds are wary creatures and can take time to adjust to new feeders and food.
