Very Pleased - buying second pair

We have owned a pair of these binoculars for several years and have been very pleased with them. They are sturdy and not too heavy to carry on a day's walking. I am now looking to buy a second pair of binoculars and will be buying another pair of this model. By Nature Lover, on 5 Jan 2018

My wife and I bought a pair of these binoculars whilst on holiday in the Bempton Cliffs area. The young man who dealt with us was very helpful and our choice was made after trying several pairs. My wife has a problem with her hands and this model suited her as they are not heavy and she can hold them steady. However, having had them for nearly only 4 years my wife used them to view the Lunar eclipse recently. When she went to put them away the focusing thumb wheel fell off. As a retired design engineer I inspected them to see what could have caused this. The answer is simply really poor design. Basically the thumb wheel/cover is made of non-rigid rubber. A plastic disc is fitted to the focus mechanism by 2 small screws and the thumb wheel/cover is glued on to that. The main fault in the design is that the disc has holes punched all round its perimiter, hence it is not solid and therefore week at the points between the holes. As this is a thumb wheel there will be pressure applied from either the top or the bottom. This pressure causes the wheel to want to bend either up or down respectively. Because of my wife's problem with her hands she can't apply heavy pressure to the wheel, so this was not due to heavy handedness. The resulting 'flexing' over the few years of use, bearing in mind they are not in use every day of the week, has caused the disc to break in half and come unattached to the thumb wheel/cover. In fact the binoculars are only used on holidays and the occassional day out. I can see a better way of securing the thumb wheel/cover to the focus mechanism, but my dilemma is wether to fix the problem myself and invalidate the warrantee should anything go wrong with the optics or send them back under warrantee and have them replace the thumb wheel/cover with the same poor design as before and wait for them to breakdown again, but this time probably out of warrantee. I am therefore very sceptical about the quality of RSB products and would not buy anything else from their range.

RSPB response: Thank you for your review. We offer a warranty on our products for situations exactly like this. Although very rare, particularly with this model, the odd fault will develop on occasion and we are happy to fix these under warranty. There is, however, nothing wrong with the design of this focus wheel. The disc that you mentioned purposely has the holes around its perimeter, and these are actually to prevent it breaking. The holes offer flexion to this disk, so that it does not snap under pressure and mean it is able to withstand large temperature changes without the plastic warping and becoming weak, they also help the glue to grip the disk and offer a firm hold. Without this flexion the disc is actually more likely to snap as it will not be able to absorb as much pressure. This is a standard design in the optics industry and these very rarely break under normal use. This fault on WPG binoculars specifically is very rare indeed, and we will be happy to fix it under warranty, please contact customer services to arrange this. We would again like to reiterate that there is a 10 year warranty on this product, and rare faults are not a reflection of the overall quality or the range. By Bird Watcher, on 6 Oct 2015
